Love The Fish
Ive seen people do small groups of these but I cant find any long term results.
Please share your experiences.
How many fish?
What size tank?
Tank mates?
ETC......
Pics are always fun.
Thanks

Yes my new avatar did inspire this thread.

I watched a piece on the TV one day, it showed a little patch of algae that was being tended by two powder blue tangs. They guarded it and ate from it, never straying too far away.

Then suddenly, this large school of convict tangs, maybe 50 members, descended on the algae patch. The powder blues swam around trying to defend their little algae patch, but to no avail, they were hopelessly outnumbered. The convicts ate every last bit of the algae, then moved on. The powder blues were left with no algae. If a fish can look sad, those two were it.

A very interesting piece, in my opinion. It shows why powder blues are somewhat aggressive to other fish, and it shows how a group of convicts work together.

Thanks Bax,
I read it already. Not really what I wanted to hear but thats why I asked. I would try it if my tank was gonna be like 500 gallons but its only gonna be about half that. Maybe I will do 1.

Pinnatus,
What show was that. That would be cool to watch.

Blue Planet? Sea's of life?

I remember seeing the same clip.

I believe so, I saw it also.

It looks like you already read through my thread where I tried this, but I'll just restate in case you didnt get it all, I wouldnt recommend having a multiple grouping of convicts in your tank unless it was going to be huge. What made me want to try was seeing them in Hawaii in small and large groups without any apparent bickering so I thought I could get away with it in my tank. After a couple days the fighting was pretty much nonstop. It wasnt as if they were killing each other, but they were chasing a lot and stressing out the other fish in the tank, plus they were absolute gluttons at feeding time, even pushing aside the much larger angels/tangs that I had.

They have a definite gang mentality in my opinion, "convict" tang is a good name for them not just because of their appearance :)
