a substrate will build up heavy metals over time. there is not a export mechanism for these heavy metals. the question of how much this is a problem depends on how the heavy metals are getting into the system and in what quantity. using a substrate that is replace on a regular basis is a great way to remove any build up of heavy metals over time. heavy metals accumulate in marine sediments over time, and in natural systems, this is an unfortunate fact. if we want to maintain our systems for extended periods of time, we need to be aware of this.
