Cool Fish Suggestions

Hi, I am looking to buy a fish that not a lot of people have, that it is reef safe, and not very hard to take care of... I want to have a fish that when other people that are in the hobby can appreciate it becuase they never have seen one. Maybe one with outstanding colors, colorful, or features that can make him stand out and be the center piece of my tank.. For example I went to a friends house and he had a Tailspot Blenny, I want something like that.. I had never seen one before and it was really fun to watch. Thats pretty much what I am looking for a fish not a lot of people have seen, that is fun to watch, and has nice/interesting coloring/features. My tank is a 57 gallon thanks :)

Fang blennies of the genus Meiacanthus are small, peaceful, colorful, and always out and about.

Have you looked at yellow assessor's? Not overly pricey, uncommon, reef-safe and passive. Mine is constantly swimming about upside down, sideways and vertically. You're lucky to catch him swimming the 'correct' way.

Possum wrasse....not really flashy colors but lots of personality! I also love my Midas Blenny and Yellow assessor! those are my 3 favorites

My favorite fish so far is the Zebra Blenny. Not rare but much more personality than any other fish I've kept. He got excited like a puppy when I came home from work, swimming up and down the front glass. He always watched people in the room. He also like being hand fed. He got into the overflow and I lost him:(

Mimic filefishes are awesome. Stay small, fun to watch, non-aggressive, and quite hardy.

Curious wormfish
orange spot filefish (from DD)
school of shrimpfish

I think the OP said easy to care for which these three fish are not. Further I think they're looking for an outgoing fish which I don't think the wormfish is, though it is nifty looking.

OP, what do you like? I wouldn't make impressing other aquarists the criteria for my fish choices. Get what you like. If you have a lid, I would suggest a Yellow "Coris" Wrasse. Eats everytthing, always out and about and a beautiful, striking yellow. I am really loving mine. Not unusual though.

If you want a colorful, relatively small, and active fish, then I think a variety of wrasses fit the bill. There are many very colorful species which are reef safe, stay fairly small, are peaceful, very active, very hardy, and extremely colorful. These may not be the rarest of fish, but what is very cool is that it is often best to keep a group of these wrasses together consisting of one male and several females. When you do so, you get to observe some fascinating mating behavior where the fish often engage in very colorful displays toward each other which is not something seen in many reef tanks. Below are some suggestions.

If you have about $800.00 to spare, the below basslet is perhaps one of the most colorful and sought after reef safe fish seen in the hobby and is definitely very rare to see in tanks.

If you have anywhere from $200-$400 to spare, the below golden dwarf moray eel is reef safe and small, although a bit reclusive and not something you see often in many reef tanks. Also, you need to make sure your corals are adequately secured if you keep this eel because the eel can knock corals around.

The picture on the last link is incorrect. Its a picture of a Brazilian Golden Moray(gymnothorax miliaris). The dwarf is distinguished by its baby blue eyes.
I have a Miliaris. Awesome eel!! But not exactly fit for a 57.

Hey guys thanks a lot for the suggestions really nice fish you all suggested :)

I only have 3 fishes on my tank so I can still do a lot of things... Right now I have a firefish and a Striped Fang Blenny he is awesome! He swims all day on all places of the tang and has a shell as a hideout really cool fish :)

Keep the suggestions coming thanks :)

These fish are totally reef-safe and unusual, but not "small fish safe":

These fish are unusual and are small fish safe:

Acreicthys tomentosus (bristletail filefish) & Paracentropogon rubripinnis (red-fin waspfish):
