It's been posted quite a few times. What she says about the meral saddle is now thought to be incorrect. it is now believed to be their to help cushion the blow and make it easier on the animal, not store the energy.
To my knowledge they do not communicate by striking. Only 2 species of mantis make any noise beside their strikes. They are H. californiensis and a Lysiosquillid. But this is to my knowledge, so there could be more or less. Just remembering an old post by Dr. Roy.
