Coolest thing I've seen so far :)

My anemone just sucked up its base and went all weird and I wasn't sure what was going on... then I saw it expelling brown strands (waste I think). Anyway... the large clownfish in it ate the strands, swam away and then spit them out! She kept doing this over and over and pulling it out of the anemone to help it expel :) It was very neat to watch! I guess that's one way clownfish help anemones :)

I could be wrong but I just read on a large anem FAQ that expelling brown "strand" looking stuff is a sign that something is worng with the anem and it's spitting out it's zooxanthellae.

I'm trying to find that huge FAQ now to verify.

It wasn't exactly a strand... it was just light brown stuff and as it came out the clown would eat it and then go spit it out. After this, it shriveled up very tiny and all tentacles deflated but today it's full again.

Unfortunately now it has let its base detach and it's just sort of floating there with the sides attached to a rock. Not sure what's going on.

Well, it could be feces but it also sounds very likely based on your description of its behavior that the anemone expelled its zooxanthe.

Anemone feces is not strings and brown. When an anemone defecates it is normally within a day or two of eating a fish or something and it looks dark and solid.

Since you said the anemone is laying there detached I am quite confident that the anemone is in bad shape. If you can, post some pics and post all the params of your tank.

lets not jump to conclusions without a picture but usually this is perfectly normal my clowns do this all the time its part of their relationship
anemone POO comes in all different forms just like a human depends on diet and other factors

I'm leaving my lights off for 2 days so it's a bit difficult to get a picture now but the anemone is being very weird.

It's now standing up about 5-6" from the ground and is almost fully open... it looks like a palmtree! The base isn't buried in the sand and for some reason the clown dug a giant hole infront of it. As far as I can tell it's doing fine because it's open nice and big but for some reason it's just standing up like a tree.

I'm just going to leave it alone and see what happens.

why are the lights off?

Well... it's a long story so bear with me.

I've been using regular tap water since my tank started and I won't have access to RODI until April 15th when I move. I didn't have many problems with my 260w PC lights but when I started running my 500w of MH for 10hours per day and 216w T5 for 12 (to get max viewing) I've been getting some nuisance algae. Thick brown hairy stuff on the rocks and lots of growth on the glass (phosphates - I know). All this will be fixed when I get a sump/all RODI on April 15th but until then I'm doing my best.

Anyway, I have a bleached SPS coral that I purchased in bad condition and I'm trying to get it to recover. Its polyps don't come out under the MH and some algae is growing on it. I'm trying to give it 2 days to recover and bit and have its polyps out for bit and then I will gradually increase my lighting again. I'll probably limit my MH to 7-8 hours and keep the T5 actinics at 12.

All my other corals seem to be fine so I'm just trying to help my new monti. I've read threads on here recently where people go lightless for 2-3 days and say that it seems to help the corals.

I still have ~15w of moonlights on.

Hmm...did the anemone start "pooing" soon after the metal halides were placed on the tank? If so it is possible that it got shocked which killed the zooxanthe hence its efforts to rid itself of the decaying matter.

Now it is possible that it is simply defecating, perhaps it got some food poisoning lol?

At any rate a pic would be great.

I still say it sounds like it is bleaching, HOWEVER...this does not by any means make it a lost cause. Anemones can recover quite well from bleaching if given a good stable environment and they are fed plenty.

Best of luck with the tank, sounds like yu have yer hands full right now.

Here are 2 pictures. The top part of it is not bleached at all. If anything it's browner than when I purchased it.

You can see the hole in front. The larger clownfish digs holes with its tail and dug one right down to the glass basically.

It's a little lighter than it could be, but it doesn't appear to be full-on bleached...

I wonder why it's not attaching?

It looked like this before and then I need to move a rock it was on because it came lose. It moved around a bit and then after it shrunk it ended up in this spot and stretched up.

Here's the pic from before:

It has no shriveled up quite a bit now and the tentacles are shriveled too (about 40% of them).

Should I try moving it somewhere?? I'm not quite sure how to help it right now. Would it maybe want to be placed up on rocks or something?

This is how it looks now:
