Cooling fan question

So I am building a tank in a little grove in my place that use to be a wet bar, long story short there is a shelf above where my tank is going to be and I want to put a PC fan in there to cool the water. It will be about 8-9"ish above the waterline and pointing straight down on the very center of the top of the tank (36x24x20 tank). Most people I have seen that use fans for cooling have them blowing across the water, but will blowing straight down be a problem? was thinking like a 5" fan (120mm). Will this cause any kinda problems or will it even work and get the job done?

It will work fine blowing down, the point is to get the air moving above the water so more can evaporate.

Dude I totally use one like that now. Same height blowing into my sump. Works excellent! 150g mixed reef tank and no chiller. Just remember you will need to top off more often. I use 2-4 gallons a day. I also love Dayton fans. Used them on 4 tanks now including 2 nanos. My 150 and my old 350g system.

How is the noise level from the daytons? I had some cheap fans on my 90 but couldn't stand the intense sound when they would fire up.

Not worried about evaporation, going to have my RO/DI under my tank (well next to it in something else) with a float switch for a top off. So that shouldn't be a problem. But as far as fans go.... Will 120mm fan do the job for my size tank? and where do you buy them from? I do NOT want to hear it so the quieter the better. Willing to spend some extra cash on this if i have to get get it so it wont start making noise at any point. Literally I want to have to check to make sure it is on, no noise if possible. What works for you guys?

Either one will work, the more surface area the better. But the sump you would be able to hide it form view.

I use 2 120mm fans on my 4'x2'x2' tank, and it is enough for me. The Noctua ones I mentioned are extremely quiet. You can hear them on full blast, but it is not annoying in the least a very faint whish of air. They have silicone feet that prevent vibration that should be used.
