Copepod and CBB ???

I just got a copperband butterfly (wife's choice, but nice)

SO far it is doing well, along with the yellow tang.
The butterfly is now eating off rock at night and just swimming during the day (and being chased/bullied a bit)

I have been feeding frozen plankton, mysis and bs for two days without a taste from the CBB, but all other fishy's eat very well.

I thought that the CBB would do well, as I have plenty pods without any pred. for them
except my flamer (which does not pick too much, since I feed well)
I was planning on getting a mandarin, so was prepared for the pod pop to grow.
And also giving some time to train to eat frozen/live foods

I just cleaned my return pump and put it back in with out the prefilter sponge block. I thought that it would allow the pods easier to refill into the display on their own. I have just started to dose with live phyto, and also am ready to start growing it for the pods and also the corals.
I will be getting some cheato (sp?) to have for the pods in the sump/refu.

My question is:

Is it ok to run the return pump without the prefilter?

Or should I put it back on and manually grab the pods from the sump on LR and place it in the DT?

Thanks,
Rob

It is ok to run without it but I would leave the prefilter on the pump just so nothing gets sucked in and potentially cause some damage.

You can always swish the cheato around in a small bucket or large bowl and dump the critters into the tank manually.

Thanks, I have to get some cheato now.

I was just doing this the easy way before the cheato came in.

I will prob give it a week or so and then clean the pump once more and put the prefilter back on.

My filter sponges get loaded with 'pods... I actually almost cringe when I clean pads out, as the 'pods are removed...

You'll notice a huge difference when feeding phyto and pod population increase....

running w/o or with a filter pad so long as you are feeding phyto should allow a good population to reproduce. Certainly safer for your pump to have the filter pad.

My CBB won't eat mysis or other prepared food either. I supplement with live blackworms and live littleneck clams on the half shell. I feed them in a 1" pvc cap with birdnet over top held on with elastic bands. This allows the fairly non-aggressive CBB to eat at his leisure whilst otherwise his friends would eat it all before he had a bite. One clam is a lot of pods in terms of nutrients. Blackworms (not bloodworms) are also fairly caloric. Otherwise my CBB might just fade away.

tylor thanks for the useful info.

I will give it a few more days for the butterfly to adjust and lower stress until I put in some spot feed for it. It is not going for anything floating in the water.
It was picking at my asternia yesterday, hopefully he can eat that up soon.

THanks,
Rob

My CBB has eaten blood worms from the beginning. The pod thing works, i do the same with my chaeto, just shake it in bucket of water and put into DT. I also put a jar of the DT's pods in the display tank and one in the sump. I have some pods in my chaeto that look the size of a big red ant.
