Copepods

At what point should I start to see copepods on a new startup? I bought live rock locally but the guy had it in a brute can for a week or two with no circulation or lighting it has cycled in my nano for about 3 weeks now. Ammonia and nitrites 0 nitrates are at 6ppm. I haven't add any livestock yet but I'm affraid that because he just let it sit in the can with no lighting or flow that maybe it wasn't really "live". It did spoke with ammonia and then dropped, but I figured I would have seen some copepods by now.... Should I buy a bottle of them online or see if my LFS has any? I was going to go there tomorrow anyways and get my CUC

You're right that the once was "live" was most likely "dead" rock when you got because of the lack of circulation. I recommend that you let the tank cycle for another 2-3 weeks to before adding anything. I know it's hard to wait but it would be best that you did. I don't think you'll see any pods naturally at this point so if you want any then you'll need to pick up a bottle of them. How has your water tested?

Hit up AlgaeBarn.com. They have a buy on get one free combo pack of pods for new members. My order should be arriving tomorrow :)

Forgot to mention, the large ammonia spike was due to adding some ammonia chloride solution, misread the instructions and added too much

Why do you think you need to add/buy copepods at this time?
No reason in particular I suppose. I've just been looking at other tanks that have finished cycling and such and am jealous that I don't have any in there floating around lol.[emoji1]

But in all actuality I guess I don't really need them yet seeing as how I don't have any livestock

Just hold on for now unless you really just want to drop that money for a few bugs you may never see again :) ..

While you might have killed many with your "oops".. you might find more than you think in there since you stared with live rock..
And seeing how quickly your tank recovered from that you certainly had a good amount of living bacteria that came over on that rock..

Good to know, thank you. Based on my levels above would you say it's okay to add some CUC today? I'm off today and was going to go to the LFS to pick some out. Or should I wait a bit longer? I'm starting to get some algae, so I've had the tank in blackout for a few days.

Pics are AFTER scrubbing the bulk of it off followed by a 30-40% water change.

Yup I would just wait. You will be surprised how they start showing up. I never introduced any and lo and behold they are all over my sump now.

Your tank has cycled.. You can start adding CUC to go after that algae..

And remember
"NOTHING good happens fast in this hobby"

So there is nothing wrong with going slow stocking the tank, just waiting,etc.. But get that CUC in there doing work..

Ya I'm going to add the CUC and wait a good 2-3 weeks, then add a coral or two, wait a few weeks then two clowns.
