copper question

Hey guys. Wanted to post this here since most of you are very knowledgeable about sps dominant tanks.

Im in the process of setting up my 30 gallon sps dom system. Just got my lights and skimmer ordered today.

Now im trying to decide what route to go with my sump. I have a standard 29 gallon tank that was used to QT fish from my old 90 gallon reef. It has had Mardel Coppersafe in it to treat ich on some of my tangs.

Can this tank be reused as a sump on my sps system without having harmful effects on them? I know everyone seems to think copper bonds to the silicone but ive heard some people say that even if it did it would release in such small amounts that regular filtration/water changes would keep it from harming anything.

What are your thoughts on this? I know rock with copper is a no no. But just the glass tank doesnt seem like a big risk. Although im not at all opposed to just buying a new sump tank...sorta hate to waste this one.

The tank has had fresh water fish in it for 6 months or so. That could also have helped wash any residue away

I did the same thing some years ago with a quarantine tank.
After the treatment with copper and the removal of all fish i kept the tank running as a hospital tank for two+ months.
The first day after the fish removal,made a 80% Wc and used some carbon in the filter.
I tested almost every week and the copper test always showed 0.

For the record and to be more specific,during quarantine i used cupramine(seachem) and saliferts copper test.

I then used it for 1 year as a sump and nothing showed any kind of problem.

If you can,try to run it with water and test it,for a couple of weeks(if not more) just to be sure.

In a nutshell,i don't think you will have a problem

I wouldn't bother. I have absolutely no experience nor scientific grounding to say either way. For the price of a new sump for that sized tank I just wouldn't bother risking it. Maybe it would be fine, but if it isn't it would be a royal pita.
