Coral Beauty and Midnight Angelfish Interactions

Hey guys,

I've had my coral beauty since I established my tank, and seeing as I've gone the strict peaceful community route, she appears to have flourished beautifully here.

There was a Midnight Angelfish (which has the same shape/size as my coral beauty, expect completely black all over) at my LFS and I've been reluctant to bring it home for the sake of stress on my coral beauty. Well, after 3 weeks of no one else getting it, I've decided to pick this one up.

Last night, I had the midnight acclimate for about an hour (just in case) and their interactions upon entry were quite interesting. My coral beauty noticed the midnight at once, and they started circling each other, and flapping fins to each other. Is this a good sign? There was no sign of aggression so I think it is but I would still like to get some expert input on what all of this "flapping" means. Thanks for taking the time.

Sounds like they are just getting to know each other. It may seem fine for the time being but there's always a chance there will be aggression later on. I'd keep an eye on them, most dwarf angels don't get along well together.

Thanks for the update.

My coral beauty has yet to ever show aggression towards anything, but I'm aware it can still happen. I chose this midnight because 1. It's gorgeous, and 2. it is one of the most peaceful angelfish according to my LFS and some of my own research. I'll keep a close eye on both of them.

i have a midnight in mine, though i had the only one on here. but yeah, mine is very timid, for the first 4 days i didn't see him, now he will come out and swim with the tang, and foxface, but if something moves, into the rocks he goes. I doubt hell be aggressive toward the coral beauty, but the coral beauty may be to him.

anyways got any pics of him :D?

Ugh, I only see him because I'm crouched down looking through my landscape of LR, so he's only visible within the shadows. A picture might not work out for now. I'll be sure to post one once he has the confidence. He looks like a darker alter ego of my coral beauty.

When combining angels, it's probably wiser to choose fish of different colors with different markings. Also fish don't necessarily see colors the same way we do. The other rule of thumb is to add a larger one. None of that means yours won't be fine - just fyi. I hope yours work out ok - time will tell. :)

Thanks for the info.

Still pretty early on but the midnight is still very cautious. The coral beauty looks at him, and turns away most of the time. If she sticks around him, they just start flapping their fins again. It's pretty cool watching them interact. I'm waiting for a perfect opportunity to video tape them doing this.
