I have heard mixed messages about coral beauty angels .
some say they are reef safe some say the are not when they grow up
Has anyone had any experience with them?

my bet is not reef safe. have never had one. always wanted one, but they are nippers. the only angel that I know that wont are the swallowtails.

I've had a coral beauty in my tank for almost a year now with no problems. not to say that all of them are like mine.

I think Brandon (Nevessl) has a CB in his tank too. I have a pygmy cherub angel and it doesn't nip at anything...

Most will say around 50/50 with those guys. I've had one but not in a reef. The safest angels for reef tanks are Genicanthus sp. because they eat zooplankton out of the water column in nature.

My recommendation, based on my experience with fish is to only add questionable fish if you can get them out or test them out in a smaller system. I think coral beauty angels are generally ok, but even most safer angels are considered somewhat of a risk for picking at corals...

Best case, get one from a reefer that has had it in their system for a while with no problems.

I've had a Coral Beauty and a Cherub Angel now since January 06. I also have a Half Black Angel that I've had since August 06. I've had another Coral Beauty in the past. I've also had a Flame Angel, Flameback Angel, and Nox Angel in the past. None of them ever caused any problem. I did get a Lemonpeel Angel that nipped on coral tentacles from the time he hit the water. My wife caught him with a net in about 10 minutes.

I put a Klein's Butterfly in one tank to eat Tulip Anemones and he was picking at coral tentacles. I caught him Tuesday and banished him to the sump. He would be great for a fish only tank.

Mine seems fine, but... I can't seem to keep clams long-term. It's probably me, but I'd love to be told that the coral beauty is nipping them when I'm not looking. Can I blame him without proof? I'd never get rid of him. I just want a scapegoat.

Yep!

The only problem I have with mine is that he developed a taste for my nassarius snail's snorkel-thingy... so they can't go under sand I don't think and a lot of them die off... and they're expensive and my sand is starting to look like crap so you may not want to buy any CBs at the Critter in a few weeks. j/k... I think.

Anyway, that is the only thing he has nipped at. Quite ridiculous. :)

Had ours for 1.5 years and no problems. In with SPS, LPS, zoas and a clam.

Of course, he could turn evil at any time ;)

They are about 50/50 I personally have one as well and have had no problems with it in my reef. Others have had horror stories. If you buy one that starts nipping at your corals trade it in at your LFS!

i am with reefthuz, its 50/50 the first one i had was great, never bothered anything the second, eat zenia and picked at other polyps like no tommorow... i think a pygmy angel is a better bet i have had better luck

The one I have is a nipper, that said if in a tank with a very large soft corals with good regen abilities I belive it would go totally unnoticed. Small corals I belive the fish would harm them, especially if you didn't have much else in the tank.
