Coral Beauty... destined to die

How can someone operate a saltwater aquarium without being able to measure salinity. Don't necessarily need a refractometer... there are other tools. Cheapest is a hydrometer. A simple plastic apparatus that once calibrated is a fast easy method as well.

I believe the OP said he has a hydrometer. I think it's fine to just start out with this, most hobbyists do. However, I agree the accuracy is not the best. The problem with most hydrometers, besides inaccuracy, is that if you want to do a hypo treatment, their scale doesn't go low enough. Then you have to rely on doing dilutions (if you know how). :)

Refractometer is best, but there is no shame in using a hydrometer - IME the meaure is usually pretty close if the unit is relatively new.

One of my most serious early mistakes. Trusting a Hydrometer, that was the cause of one CB death. The other is a mystery & remains so..

I just called down there and they still have it, I hope to get down there soon to see what state the CB is in.

Also, they have one actinic bulb left that I am going to get so I will have a 10000k and actinic t5 bulbs :D

@mapleredta, I have no clue what ARC is =/

Update:

He is still there, but the spot has gotten a bit larger and his tail is split (like the damsels in there nipped at him).

I think I am just going to leave him in there :( Even though I don't want to.

He's already ailing, and they have him in with a bunch of damsels that are harassing him? They need their heads knocked together. Idiots.

i went through almost the same thing as you
4inch absolutely beautiful coral beauty, but with ich. i couldnt resist seeing such a beautiful thing die, so i bought it and QTd it....
5months later, its in my DT, fat and healthy. buying or not buying a infected fish isnt going to stop a LFS from not treating them and i also think feeding dead fish to some other marine animal like an anemone is really the right thing to do. I would rather have a marine animal feed another marine animal if it died, like if it would happen in the wild. at least by its death it is helping something else. if i have a fish die, its food for my mantis.
gl on your decision, hope it all works out
