Coral dipping - need the scoop

Thanks everyone. I'm going to do a 5 week QT for my frags, change the plug, and dip weekly in Bayer.

If you're going to be that diligent about dipping, then make sure each group of corals gets the 5 weeks. So if you're 4 weeks in and you add a new frag to the QT, then the 5 weeks starts all over again.

Absolutely, I think being that diligent is worth it. Why risk it and cut it early, right. Thanks for the advice.

Can you QT a coral frag and fish at the same time? Or should they be kept separate?
What type of lighting should be placed on a 20g QT?

If your going to be dipping the corals with bayer I would not keep fish in with the corals especially in something as small as a 20 gallon. If using bayer you will get some residual in the qt tank and it can kill anything with a nervous system if strong enough. I put dipped rocks back into my 180 gallon and wiped out my shrimp within minutes and I had rinsed the rocks in 2 different buckets of clean water before putting back into the tank. I believe other products are fish safe though.

OK, well I was going to use bayer for my first coral frag, but I was hoping to be able to possibly QT the coral on its own in it's own container, so I can put the fish in the 20g QT.

If you use bayer or coral rx, do you still need to QT the coral for 72 days?

What types of corals do you dip? All? - zoas and acro mostyle

What do you dip with? coral rx pro or nothing

What is your dipping process? double the rec. dosage double the time

Do you QT at all? no

If you had the resource to QT, do you see it being effective? if you have the time and $ absolutely

Most people adhere to the 5 week dip method. Once a week. I tried both coral rx and bayer and felt that bayer was easier on the corals. The 72 days you mentioned is the time frame for leaving a tank fallow for ich.

That really depends on the coral but I would try to keep the coral under lighting that is close to what it will receive in the display tank.

I ordered a large bottle of coral Rx with a recent BRS order. We will see how it does. I hear some liking Bayer better and others liking CRX.

As mentioned, I will be dipping weekly for 5 weeks. Most likely more towards 6 weeks when it comes down to it. Id rather have something in QT a week longer than battle a possible pest in DT.

Depends on the source.

Trusted source = dip / quarantine for one day /dip / quarantine for another hour / place

Unknown source = dip / quarantine for a week-10 days / dip / quarantine another hour / place

The purpose of quarantine is to inspect, especially at night.

Great, thanks.

Has anyone scrubbed their new frad with a toothbrush if aefw does come off during dip? Here is my thought. You dip a new SPs. Aefw died off. You shrug but are glad that they died before your DT and put them in. Wrong. Eggs lived and hatch 3 weeks later.

Could you see aefw then use a magnify glass and scrub entire SP's to kill or knock off eggs? Isn't that the cycle broken before it enters your tank on day one?

If you see anything, it stays in quarantine for a month with dips every 10 days. Or - toss it if you have the stomach.

I'm doing an import buy from a foreign land. :uzi: on any pests. They will have a 300g qt tank. :deadhorse: but anyone dip and scrub or is it ineffective? I want to put aefw eggs in a skillet and not a tank. After everything I read. HOW DO WE KILL THE EGGS? That my friends is the question of 2016 for sps lovers.

There is no reliable way to kill the eggs. The key is to make sure no eggs enter your system.
