cant seem to be able to load pics, you can see them in my gallery they are the most recent pics, identifi 1 identifi 2,they where given to me ,i have no name or care info. if you have a min. give a newbie a hand, thanks

#1 is a Trachyphyllia sp. (aka Brain Coral)

#2 is ... something. Is it hard/stony? If not some sort of finger leather maybe.

Try posting images on ImageShack.us or PhotoBucket. The gallery only allows tiny tiny pictures.

thanks

thanks

thanks for your help, 2 seems to be on the soft side i could se it moving with the flow, thanks a bunch ,anyone any idea on what 2 could be,

2 looks like either a Finger Leather or a Keyna Tree. How long have you had the brain? Dose it expand more?? It should. Also they like to be kept in the sand bed.

thanks

thanks

AquaReeferMan, ive had them both around 3 days ,yea i was just reading that it should be in the sand bed, thing is i have 2x250 w mh. lighting plus 2 55w actincs,my tank is 36 in. tall ,lights are about 6 in. above tank.If i place the brain in the sand do you think that it will recieve enough light at 42 in. away, any help will be greatly appreciated i have tons of questions ,thanks for your time.

If it doesn't inflate more after a week, I would place it lower. I've kept a brain under PC for a year w/ no problem.
Do you know what kind of lighting it was used to before you got it?

thanks wrott

thanks wrott

i wish i knew ,i dont even know where it came from, thing is i had a so called pro taking care of my aquarium but she and the shop shut down overnight never saw her again,to make things worse i am not in the u.s ,here were i live there are no shops or nowhere to ask for help ,so here i am trying to keep my tank going ,and i dont know much,im learning and ill keep triying, ill see if it inflates a bit ill give it a couple of days, do you think my lights at 42 in. away will be enough if i lower it to the sand bed?

bundy13 I'm surrounded by fish stores and I still come here for advice. You found the right place. I suggest using the search feature, reading stickies, and just browsing the forums reading what people are doing.

Since you were sort of tossed into taking care of it, it's going to be tough at first, but before long you will be the local champ.

What are your water parameters?

PH -
ALK -
SG -
Ammonia -
Nitrate -

I do agree that 42" could be too deep for 250W halides, but I really don't think a brain (or any LPS) would die from this, especially if you can spot feed it mysis, brine, raw table shrimp when tenticles are out--hopefully in the next few days.

thanks again

thanks again

tkeracer619 ,yea i am learning alot here there is alot to learn,

PH -8-4
ALK -8.2
SG -10.24
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate -0.02 i have a calcium reactor calcium is at 400 i am adding to the sump everyother day at half the reccomended strenght ,kentmarine phytomax ,kentmarine iodine lugols formula one a week, also trace elements

wrott
thats the reason i didnt put it in the sand at 42in away the light will be weak ,what would you do leave it in the rook or lower it?

also whe you say raw table shrimp is that fish from the supermarket?

I wouldn't dose iodine to your tank - its easily overdosed. But other than that, good job :)

I almost cooked an open brain once under 250W halides at about 22" from the bulb. They're actually quite low light species and probably would do best on the sandbed. Try putting it under the halide though - its brightest in the center.

Raw table shrimp are the raw (not the red pre-cooked) shrimp from the supermarket, yes.

theatrus.thanks ill lower it to the sand bed and try feeding it on sat. see how it goes,

on the iodine i am dosing 1/4 recommended strenght, once a week
i thought i needed it,should i stop?

As usual per noob, I'm going to suggest a book or two... :P

'Corals' by borneman -- excellent coral resource
'The Conscientious Marine Aquarist' -- forget who

You need to get up to speed fast. That's not a newbie system...

bundy13,
you go to the pic in your gallery, left mouse click the picture to bring up it's properties. Highlight the web addy for the pic by clicking and draging the mouse over it. Once it's high lighted, hit "ctrl" and "c" on the keyboard to copy it on to the magical clip board.
Now come to your post, and type and you should be done.
See if that works...
:)
