Why?

They can be very pretty, but can spread easily.

Holy smokes! That looks painful. I already handled it while putting it in my QT. Did I just get lucky to not be stung like that?

That doesn't happen to everybody. I've been handling these things for years without gloves and haven't had any problems like that. Just be careful though.

I've had them for 20 some years. It had never been an issue until I was moving the tank and disturbed them, perhaps a little too much.
