Coral ID?

A friend gave me this piece of coral (it is mostly brown with more whiteish trunk) as his tank was being torn down, and he wasn't sure it was still alive in his tank.

I'm wondering what this is (birds nest?) and if it still looks alive (there seem the be small polyps, but not very big)? If so, any special care tips?

I'm new to coral keeping and only have a few softies so far, so not sure exactly what this is.

Thanks for the quick response! My friend's tank was pretty neglected, so I'm hoping I can bring it back to better health. Wondering if this may be brown because of the neglect and if it might return to a colored montipora?
