this came in on some LR that a friend of mine has, it has really spread quickly in the past two weeks. any ideas what it is?

Look like (white or bleached) starpolyps of some variant. That could explain why they are spreading like wildfire.

Definitely a star polyp. Will have a pinkish mat that it spreads on.
