Coral Keeping

Hello everyone,

I am looking to make my tank a reef tank. My filtration consits of 20g fuge, 120 Coralife skimmer. As far as lighting i have a 8x54 Nova Extreme T5 fixture. I always wanted to do but i never wanted to try because of money and loosing them could be expensive. I really need some tips on keeping them. Maybe some starter corals and some pictures of them and advice on them. Also would like to know is there any specific levels i should keep for great success with corals. I am really looking forward to try to get into some corals.

Thanks

Can start with Soft corals (like leather corals/wide variety out there), your lighting is fine. Soft corals are more forgiving then LPS & SPS corals. Good flow & keeping an eye on the Alkalinity level 8-11, more specifically would be good. SG around 1.023-1.026

Thanks guys. I do have some mushrooms that i thought died but they are starting to really spread and come out out know. I might go to the LFS soon and try some of those corals. Thanks Again.

Mushrooms, soft corals, xenia ,gsp, zoanthids and paly's are all good starters . They all spread fast and will help fill your tank. Your lighting is pretty descent you should have no prob with LPS's. Pagoda cups, brain coral and trumpet (candy canes) are some excellant starter corals.

Since youre asking about coral types, and water quality requirements, Id suggest looking at a couple books- its easier to get concise information that way on a wide range of beginning topics.
I would suggest Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman. The Conscientious Reef Aquarist by Bob Fenner isn't too bad (though I found Borneman's book to be more helpful when I first got into coral).
