what is that whiteish root looking stuff? i don't see it on other people's zoos.

It looks like it's just a sponge. It almost looks like large, retracted Digitate Hydroids, but if it was, the Zoanthids touching them would be retracted from the stings of their potent nematocysts. I vote harmless sponges.

Thats a good question. How long has that stuff been there? Did it just pop up? Has it been slowly growing? Do any zoo polyps form from the tips? Are the "roots" connected to each other at some point? It kinda looks like a funky sponge.

it's been there for over a month.
it grew all over the last rock i had the frag on.
the zoos don't like it there and don't open up very big.
i think i'm going to take a tooth brush to it.

Sponge can be bad for zoo's if it makes the zoo's have a hard time opening. I've got some that were dying because of this. I've also read a little about it here.

It's sponges. You could try pulling the rock out and leaving it out for awhile. Zo's will ship in just wet paper towels so they are alright for quite awhile whereas some sponges if they ever touch air will die. You probably aren't lucky enough to have a sponge THAT sensitive so it may take longer. While out I would try to manually scrape off all that I could to help the effort.

i think i'm going to try and get rid of all traces of it.
it's rather ugly...

also my new avatar is groovy.
