Coral skeleton ID

I found this while wading in shallow water on an ocean beach on Long Island in New York. Im not sure if coral are found around here so maybe it somehow got up here from the south? Any ideas on what this is?

Northern Star coral, aka Astrangia danae. It's a temperate coral that is very common around LI.
