Had to pop in and say my bluespotted jawfish went on the long carpet surf ride to heaven yesterday. Poor little guy. I hope yours live long and well, peter. They certainly will have a nice home! They're magnificent little fish.

Just wanted to say, we're all counting on you.

maybe i missed it,how did you get the cycle going, did you use amonia to start the cycle or did you go natural.

good job on the setup, looks very professional

vic

Thanks Vic,

The cycle was done before I got on board. Peter has had the rocks since February and we got them into the tank in September. The nitrifying bacteria colony will grow with every livestock addition and or increase in nutrient import (feeding). Fortunately the tank is big enough that it is damn hard to overstock quickly :)

Having said that, the rock isn't up to its fullest potential due to a deficit of nutrients and light. As a result, we are battling nuisance algae plagues one after the other. All par for the course. Once the rest of the filtration goes in with our sump (don't even ask:() we will get the faded coraline "good" algae competing against the "bad" algae.

Peter,

One quick question, what brand and model of your UV for the main tank?

Thanks.

ChingChai, I think we should verify with Mr. Wilson that he would in fact recommend this brand and model. I seem to remember that he felt it was underpowered. He was not responsible for the original decision to buy it so I would suggest we verify that he would recommend it for you.

heres a video from the plasma in portugal

i dont see the yellow, the light doesnt spread out much
very nice though

portuguese certainly can grow sps eh:lol2:

I'm surprised the background on that tank isn't a pic of Christiano Ronaldo LOL really niec tank. I like the colour of that light but I don't know it didn't look very bright. Maybe it just seems that way on camera. That clam was awesome. Was that a hobbyist or a store?

If you dim them down they are blue, but lack in PAR. The tank in the video is only about 14" deep by the looks of things and the intensity looks just right with two 300 watt plasma lights plus the LEDs. Peter's tank is twice as deep so it would be far too dim. Even in the video the light isn't overly bright.

On a side note, the PAR values are high with the Plasma, and about the same as our 12,500 kelvin 400 watt MHL, but almost no algae is growing under it. Every light we have except the LED and plasma are growing coraline and nuisance algae. It has been on there for about a month now.

BTW I've been following the "maturnity" thread for a long time now. I think once this nice weather clears up I'm going to have to go get some coral frags from that guy in Portugal. No doubt about it, Portuguese take pride in their gardens and enjoy the competition and challenge. I can almost hear the guy talking... no... singing to his corals :)

Too many hits from this thread, so bandwidth from photobucket is exceeded...

Now you are confusing me. First, I don't use photobucket. The service I use is Phanfare and there is no limit and they are extremely reliable. Second there have been other occasional references to difficulty seeing pictures but I honestly do not know why. I suspect it is a browser compatibility issue or a mac vs PC but I have not seen any pattern. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has had difficulty seeing pictures on this thread.

For the record I have 4 or 5 different PC's from different manufacturers.
I have Vista, XP and Windows 7 as well as Ipad, Itouch.

The browsers I run are up to date patched explorer and safari. I have both wired and wireless configurations.

I have never had a problem seeing pictures on this thread.

Hey Peter,

I think they're referring to a series of photos that Mr. Wilson posted which are hosted on photobucket. I was able to see them up until a short while ago which is when photobucket probably shut them out due to the high bandwidth use (we all know how popular this thread is :D). The photos you posted are still fine.

Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Wilson is now a Pro... well at least on Photobucket.

I had misread the pricing when I first signed up and thought it was $25 a month, rather than for the full year. You guys are worth it. Merry Christmas everyone:celeb3:

As always your efforts are most appreciated Mr. Wilson. Thanks!:celeb1:

Time to troll through the thread to find those pictures again.

EDIT: Everything is looking awesome. Last I saw it the tank only had water in it and you were just starting to put the pumps through their paces. There was also half as much equipment as there is now! And the dream goes on...

Hi Peter, Hi Shawn

I really like what you guys have done so far. Peter I like your fish, some of them are special and I'm thinking to find some too. There is still a long way for me to finish the tank but I'm glad yours looks better and better every day .

Shawn, I've done a test for the background with the cement you've told me and I'm very satisfied. Next week I will start the real one.

You can both see pictures on my thread:
