Mr. Wilson, have you received the Skimz equipment yet from Singapore? I have been hearing good things about them and am considering going with a Skimz skimmer when I set up my new tank. Would love to know what you think after you've had a chance to check the skimmer out.

peter the high water flow on your 1300 gal tank could put stress on the joints of the tank,a lower flow would be better.

I can assure you that the 1.5" acrylic joints can withstand a lot more pressure than the flow is giving. There is no actual wave effect or surge, just alternating currents.

Yes, they just came in. I haven't taken pictures yet, but my camera is in the car for tomorrow. I put everything together with ease and without cheating and looking at the picture... well until I got to the calcium reactor :)

The stuff is very impressive. Give me a day or two to get it all running. I need to pick up some adapters to extend the metric fittings of the skimmer drain.

I got some more parts for the Profilux controller as well. It will come on line later this week when I get my pump in. I will save that surprise for later :celeb2:

Have you mentioned what your magic mix/combination is for the concrete you use in making rock structures and hiding plumbing (what products and what measurements of each). i know you used a lot of epo puddy in this tank, but just wondering.

and cant wait on the Skimz reviews and comments on build quality and such.
(and that surprise!!)

The Epo Putty bonding was done by the two sets of brothers who did the rock work (Jamie & Andrew, and Mark & Craig).

I have recently switched to BASF Emaco s88ci, but BASF Emaco 400 also works. I don't add anything except Acryl 60 if I'm covering an eggcrate wall or PVC pipe. If you are making rocks then you can mix it 50/50 with aragonite or your aggregate of choice, but at that point, normal portland cement with 10% silica fume is more cost effective. A handful of fibreglass strands per wheelbarrow helps with stress cracks/shrinkage, strength, and ability to form it like clay.

I'll dig up some photos to post the process.

Well Peter I must say very impressive!!!! Looks like you brought the ocean home with you!!! LOL your tank and fish room probably cost as much as my house does, I know the tank it self is bigger then one of my kids bedroom.... I wish you all the best and good luck. Please do post pictures of it as it goes along. (Your tank makes mine look like a 5 gal bucket!!!) LOL... And if you ever have any extra money you run out of things to spend it on, feel free to send some to NJ.....LMAO

Coral Epoxy

Coral Epoxy

What is the name of the epoxy or cement you used to hold your rock structures together? That can't be normal coral epoxy!? That would break the bank!

We need to start moving on coral purchasing soon as there is a delay with permits for imports. We will be looking into local options as well. We just need time to go out on a field trip :)

The mangrove walls will be in tomorrow I hope, and the sump will follow late next week. Things are starting to come together to the point that only fine tuning will be necessary.

I need to start looking for a job :reading::hammer:

There is pressure on the joints of the tank with alternating currents and in peters tank the water flow needs to be lower.Over ten years working with reef tanks and 40 years working with water.Have a good day

No disrespect Ralph, but this discussion has been had many times before as how thick an acrylic reef tank needs to be with hi-flows.
It has been engineered by good tank manufacturers in the States and 1.5" thick for this depth {height} of tank is over built, indeed, it could be 6" deeper with this thickness of acrylic.

Hi-flows, as Peter is doing here is imperative for "Good Practices" with Corals.

Ok, Here is a question....

Being new to Reef Central and fairly new to SW....

How is a guy to decide what all goes into your aquarium system? Dosing? Vodka? Ozone? ORP? Mangroves? Turf scrubbers? Skimmers? Refugiums? and the list just never ends.

What is best practice for a normal home aquarium? I mean we all want beautiful corals and healthy fish. What does it really take and whats just a little boost? Obvious things like water quality from the initial source are a must but from there it seems like there are a million ways to do a million differrent things.

Read, Read, and Read, then re-read. As you have already determined there are a million different ways to do this and everyone you ask will give you a different method that works for them. Look at those with long history and proven success in the aquariums and you should find common themes. There are many short lived trends and magic answers that have come and gone and you need to weed through them to determine the good stuff.

As a newbie stick to tried and tested methods until you become more knowledgable, and then you can test/trial new ideas and evaluate them for yourself.

Welcome to the hobby.

What has happened regarding Permits and delays on Permits for Coral Imports?

Nothing has happened, that's the problem :) We haven't even begun to start the process. Peter wants to buy some corals direct from Indonesia so we need to start the export permit process. Peter was hoping to go hand pick some stuff but it doesn't look like he has that kind of spare time. You know what that these retirees are like, they are busier than ever :)

Good to see you on here Shipwreck. How did that big tank work out for you? If I remember correctly you were taking one apart and reassembling it.
