Lot of different kinds of file fish. Do you have an image of the one you have so people might be able to respond more directly to your situation?

Dave is an Acreichthys tomentosus. Some younger animals may eat aiptasia but those that do will shift their diet later on to desirable corals (mainly Xeniids and LPS)

Peter, I just discovered your thread about a week ago and have been playing catch up ever since. While I will admit, I did skim a couple sections when they got very technical, a ton of information here is amazing. I have never had a reef tank, and my first I plan to be a very small one, but many different things here have given me direction.

So thank you sir for letting us share this dream with you. You have a beautiful house, beautiful cars, and a beautiful tank and I appreciate the chance to see all of it!

I have a file fish which I have been told loves to eat aptasia. I have not put him into the main display tank as I seem to remember some controversy as to just how reef safe he is. Does anyone have direct experience with this fish that should prevent me from putting him in the main display tank?

Peter

Have heard of them nipping corals but no direct experience. I think they might be more partial to certain types of corals, but have yet to go down that path myself. If your tank is well fed they may be less likely - at least that would be my expectation.

Oh dear. That must mean that I'm not very good for reef tanks. As MabuyaQ has noted, Acreichthys tomentosus may very well start in on your aptaisias, even wipe them out, but will later branch out to other inverts. It is also questionable as to how peaceful he may be, with some reports saying they are generally peaceful, while others report them chasing other fish. I guess it is a case of individual behaviour, but pretty iffy in the long run.

Yep, sounds like me alright.

Thank you very much Matt for your generous praise. You are the kind of experience we hope to see in this community where the shared information is high on quality and a confidence builder for your own build. Welcome to the group and thanks for taking the time to say hello!

I'll try and put one fish up at a time with a number at the top so that Mr. Wilson can answer any questions about the species or species behaviour.
