Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank)

In the scheme of things you would be correct. Its just that I can't really do anything till the fish room is ready. I could wait for the mars bars to cycle first then begin feeding the Display tank but that means that most of you will have retired before I have begun to feed the fishes..........

So I will be introducing the live rock to all three environments..........waiting for stability.............then bring the coral in via the mars bars to the main display tank. One looooong step at a time.

Also the Mars bars are NOT QT tanks. Lets just call them early observation tanks and if we discuss QT we will be talking a different system called the hospital tank.

Peter

now i know what mars is for
so if you were to use a octupuss during breakin period then when you remove it you can also try and keep it for observation behaviours

vic, I just can't hide anything from you can I...............I already have a name picked out for the critter....

Cal :hmm1:

Peter i got out my binoculars today after seeing those pics and im all but positive those are your neghibors cars. A man with a reeef tank as big as yours simply could not own those cars regardless of his net worth. keep up the good work, your still stringing me along for the ride.

Fish Room Update

Fish Room Update

Most of you remember this..............

The fish room is behind the right hand side of the display tank. I have planned a picture window on this side to provide visual access to the fish room in keeping with my initial plan to incorporate the fishroom into the display experience. We are still working on some of the aesthetics of the opening so stay tuned.......

Outside along the outside we put the generator and then the dedicated fish room compressor for the air conditioner.

This is the inside part of the air conditioner placed temporarily in position to test the functionality.

This is the remote that allows placement where ever it will load the best cooling given the heat generation in the room.

Hey Peter ....

How effective is this fan(s) & how many units do you have across the top of your tank? BTW what specific kind of fan is this? Negative air flow as in re-directing internal hot air to outside?

Thx,
Paul

This fan can suck a basketball through a garden hose......The enclosure over the tank is relatively but not completely air tight. A custom 25 ft aluminum box has holes every two feet constantly pulling air over the tank. The speed of the fan will be controlled by heat and humidity monitors. The air is then expelled outside but heat is captured if the season and conditions call for it.

man ... that's some kick butt negative air fan system you got there!! That would be really neat to have one such system installed over my measly 90 gallon ... :hmm2:. (Probably would suck up the entirety of my tank into infinity!! :lmao:)

Don't mean to be rude but I would assume this would cost more than your average air exchange unit for most standard regular homes huh? And oh BTW ... would there be any noise issue with these fans at all??

Peter ... Thanks for the pictoral explanations !!

Just my ignorance here, not being critical and not an expert, but how will the galvanized ducts handle all that salty air over time? Wouldn't a PVC pipe be a safer bet for the long term?

thats a good point dave salt will destroy the galvanized ,i put my glass cleaner magnet on my ductwork and there is a stain, maybe coating it with something may help.it hasnt degraded the metal but the galvanized has lost its finish

Running such high velocities through that duct with those few openings will most likely generate a lot of noise/whistling. I would also be concerned about the galvanized duct as previously stated. Otherwise, its looking great Peter!

The ducts are aluminum not galv.

But Im thinking you may need more opening to avoid noise as mentioned above. You'll know first time you turn it on.

It's getting close to water testing!

As stated by Peter it's a Alloy duct :frog: your build sure is looking good Peter.

Thank you all for the advice and concern.

We did discuss the PVC vs metal box configuration and the HVAC engineers concluded that the box was a better solution for both heat and humidity. The fan which is over powered will be tuned to ensure that there is continuous evacuation of the air mass above the main display tank. This will not be a wind storm, just steady air movement that will prevent any stagnant pockets from moisture (salty or otherwise) or heat buildup. There is also fresh air coming in to feed the system at the other end. The box design has been engineered with some science behind it. Note the curved surface for the turn at the elbow. There are no hard turns or edges to trap or create eddies in the duct.

There is a six month and one year review to determine if the ductwork is satisfactory and performing as expected. If not it will be replaced. Our belief is that the full time managed air flow will also greatly contribute to the lighting efficiency and longevity as well. The fan is incredibly quiet as is the HRV and air conditioning systems. The configuration however further optimise's the acoustic noise containment to the fish room.

Our initial tests have been very encouraging.

Ferrari are about looks, if its about going fast they are alot of cheaper and faster cars. And for me its the 0 to 60 (mph) not the top speed, as any one can go in a staright line fast. E.g.

Caterham Seven Superlight R500,
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution FQ-400
Nissan GT-R

I'm sorry I don't wanto start getting into car arguements, but you didn't actually just compare those to a Ferrari did you? So what if the 0-60 is faster, a machine is not graded by only one attribute. Those listed cars would not handle a track like a Ferrari, top speed of a ferrari, take corners at the speed of a Ferrari and most of all don't sound like a Ferrari, they sound more like an electric remote control car. By saying you prefer 0-60 don't list mitsubishi, list top fuelers.

Great work so far Peter. As for the ductwork question. I wil warn you before I give my two cents my tank is only 90 gallons and is about 4' below the duct work. So here we go..... My tank is underneath the ductwork for about 3 years now and I have not had any rust or staining at all.

Chago, hold that thought until the next commercial and I promise to give you a lot more to twist in the wind about. For the moment it's fish talk only........
