Salt Question

I am planning on using Reef Crystals for the entire ecosystem as it does work well for Chingchai and a number of others in this group. My fish guy however recommends I take a look at SeaChem's Aquavitro Salinity. He tells me it is a relatively new product, very expensive but far superior to anything else in the market for a coral reef tank.

Do any members of this thread have any experience with this product??? I would appreciate any feedback based on your experience. I have been to the web site, it sounds impressive but my knowledge in this arena is poor.

That salt thread i referenced on this thread talks about that product. alot of people do not like the aquavitro and it does not dissolve well like Tropic marin pro which is slightly cheaper than the aquavitro. Even the D&D salt is better than the aquavitro. They sell all three at Sea U Marine in markham. The only nice thing about that product is the lid on the packaging. Im sure if you ask the question you will get the same conscience

Greetings from the SF Bay Area! After two evenings of getting up to speed on your amazing project, I think I can finally contribute.

I am almost finished with my first bucket of SALINITY. Pros: Comes in a very convenient airtight bucket (will work great to store the box of Reef Crystals I just bought on sale from Pet Solutions), slightly more concentrated than most (I use approx. 1 cup for 5 gallons at 1.024 sg), and consistently mixing with pH (8.4), alk (3.8 meq/l), and cal (420). Cons: Expensive, needs at least 48 hours to cure and 72 hours to be crystal clear.

As I am very new to reefing, I don't have enough experience with other salts to provide any other feedback other than this. There is a review at "Reef Addicts Dot Com". I tried to place a link here but it kept getting translated by a bot as a "copyright violation" (which it is not under the "fair use" doctrine...BTW, I am an IP attorney on my spare time from reefing).

Will likely transition to REEF CRYSTALS in the next two weeks and we'll see how it compares (other than price).

Stay tuned...same bat-time, same bat-channel...

I know about the ground water problems in Oakville and so far have not had to deal with any of them. However the team did plan with a double sump (alarmed 24 hr monitored) just in case as well as the check valve for the same reason you mentioned.

I assume you mean a sump with a pump under your basement? This is good for groundwater around your foundation if the weeping tile isn't enough. The check valve on the main sanitary waste (sewer) is the key as most floods are caused by the municipal sewage system backing up. It really should be in the building code rather than an ad hoc item. A basement full of raw sewage is a nasty ordeal to contend with.

Patrick, thank you very much for your support and interest. I will be very interested in your experience. This is a great way to share info and support each other. Although the risks are low (based on the last ten years experience) I will check with John from DQI who is very familiar with this issue.

Thank you for the updated pictures. Nice to see the progress in the fish room. The marble is beautiful or is that travertine? If so what type? Thank you.
 
Peter - Thanks for the update. This build is so fantastic to follow. Having no tank right now, you are allowing me to "participate (or at least pretend)" and enjoy one of the best parts of having a tank; the planning and anticipation phase. Thanks again.

On another note, I got beat last night in one pocket 10-7 by an 83 year old guy with one eye (literally). Humbling but actually great to watch. As long as I am looking at this as a lesson also, then I am also winning ;) (Just not the cash lol)

Thank you klipprand and yes it is a travertine. I'm afraid I don't know the name of the pattern.

As far as salt goes ESV b-ionic is by far the best that I have used. It come in four parts that you mix into ro/di one at a time. It mixes up the clearest of any salt that I have used. I have used brightwells, reef crystals, and salinity and there is no real comparison. Marine depot has it for sale with cheep shipping

That being said I have a display smaller than your sump so take my advice for what you will.

Firstly WOW, (get used to that!) fantastic build been tagging along for a couple of weeks now, looks like your getting a bit of momentum enjoy it.
Just wanted to comment on the Aquascape ideas, I am pretty certain someone said this about a hundred pages back but keep one of the 'Master' slots for yourself, have a go at creating your own bit of ocean as well as emulating Chings et al.
Cant wait to see some more pics! Respect to Mr Wilson and all the other technical posters I think everyone is learning a lot.

On a side note one of my colleagues is seeing Cliff (Thorburn) this friday in Blackburn at the Snooker legends event, any embarrasing stories he should ask to hear?

First off, thank you for your support...........there's alot more to be said about the four grand masters soon so stay tuned. You are right, there are a number of members of this community that have made this journey very educational and enjoyable. The best part is that there is a lot more to come.

As far a Cliff is concerned, ask him about the charity golf tournament at Rotorua (pronounced Roto Rooa) in New Zealand. Its one of the funniest true stories I've ever heard. I invite you to bring the story back here to this group..............

For those who haven't seen the latest update, Chingchai has just posted a ton of photos of his tank and most importantly his fish room which you must walk through to get to his display tank..........its awesome and well worth a visit.
