Depends on where in chicago you will be Mr Wilson. Is it downtown or in a town just outside city limits. This will help me to better direct you to the best location/locations to visit.

I'm going to be in North Chicago but I'm driving 9 hours to get there so I'm not worried about a few more miles... and yes, I know how big Chicagoland is :)

This thread was suggested to me. Do you know what the top three reef specialty stores are? http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1815756

I have been told that these programs are windows based only but you can run windows on a mac and it will perform much much better than a normal PC. (got this info for some BIG time CAD gurus). They run windows on their macs as well and then use the 3D cad software (for them unigraphics)

I am very familar with Unigraphics, Solidedge, Solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD. Im sure the other programs are similar. Ive used Rhino before and theyas pretty similar so once you have the basics its a piece of cake. I have a few of the programs listed above. Gaining an active license to some of these programs can be EXTREMELY COSTLY.. like more than peter spent on his entire lighting system.

I just might be able to help you out. the program that Chingchai's designer used is a little different but its more similar to like a google sketch up. The programs listed above are used for technical drawings and engineering analysis. They can be used to do the same thing on a much larger scale Giving you better control of each piece inside your project

I have windows 7 on my mac book pro and it runs smoother than on my home pc...The mac has a software built in that will allow you to install this but only if the machine has an intel processor. I chose not to use the macs software that is installed and bought Parallels Desktop 5 for mac and installed it then windows and it will separate the hard drive and you can switch between either one at will. Good luck with the CAD program Mr. Wilson

I have a MacBook Pro with Intel core 2 duo so I'm covered for hardware (the cheap part).

I've been following the thread quietly for quite a while. Peter, the tank is simply tremendous. Can't wait for more updates!
As a recent transplant to the chicago area (2 weeks here from Atlanta), I'm still learning about the reefing community. If you find any gems, mr. wilson, please let me know! Seems fish are all the rage; I've yet to find a nice coral shop. Also, if you are in central chicago (river north), my building has a few nice tanks in the building process. I'd love to get your opinion on our little reefing community :P

Ok so I can only vouch for 1 of the three I am going to suggest in that I live on the Southside of the city. First and foremost is Midwest coral farms. It's in a warehouse but by far the best selection of corals both cheap and a bit more pricy. I spent 180 dollars in there one day got 7 different 3-4 inch sps frags and 6 softies and lps they do offer by X amount get one free stuff. Were very professional and if you want something from their show tank they will often cut it for you! I've heard very good things about seashore as well as shotank all three are north side. Again I have heard good things about shotank and seashore but I have been inside mwcf and I don't think you will be disappointed as long as their stock isn't depleted :D. They do mostly coral but are now getting into fish a bit more. I hope this helps I'd say keep asking or post in the chicagoland forums and ask for more information good luck

What makes these programs run better on a mac with microsoft windows interface?

The thing that makes a mac computer what it is, is the apple software. When you remove that and add windows tada instant windows computer. The hardware is no different with the exception of a single click mouse and some poorly named keys :D. The macbook pro even runs an intel i7 chip with nvidea based graphics... I fail to see what makes it the mac with microsoft windows run these programs better? Mr wilson what program will you be using. With drafting programs what your drafting may often be a 3D object thus your graphics card can be your down fall. You may want to check out the system requirements to ensure you can operate the software prior to converting your mac to windows. Wouldn't want you to convert and buy the software and not be able to run it without buying a new computer or upgrading your hardware.

The LFS list in this thread seems very comprehensive and current. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1815756 You can check out there websites but in general I find the best stores often have the worst outdated sites so you may have to cut some of them some slack.

Chicago is a very nice city with a great public aquarium, a huge reef community, and a few famous coral farmers & aquarium writers like Anthony Calfo & Steven Pro thrown in for good measure. I'll be happy to pass on what I find, providing I can sneak away from the wedding I'm attending... no, it's not mine :)

What the ... am I in the right thread :hmm4: I see Windows on Mac (rules :inlove:) and wedding in Chicago ... hhmmm.

I prefer ShoTank over the rest for various reasons. Midwest Coral Farm is the newest store in the area and is ok. I haven't been as impressed the last few times I went in there and it has been a while but they were still under construction last I knew. SeaSchor is alright, but I have never found anything I really liked there. They have been remodeling though, so maybe things have changed recently. LivingSea has a good selection of fish and the coral selection has been better recently it seemed, but I haven't bought anything here either. The two times I have been to Old Orchard aquarium have been plenty. No need to go there again. There are a few other places that I frequent, but they are most likely farther of a drive for you. I have only been to Old Towne in the city the one time, but it seemed like a nice (and pricey) shop.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Pretty much a good summary other than I've never been to Midwest Coral Farm. I did see Old Orchard had a 24hr power outage from the storms over the weekend and lost the majority of their livestock ... why a store would not have back-up power is beyone me. My favorite on the list to visit is Old Towne in the city, but that may be too far out of your way. It can be pricey, but it's a great looking shop with a matching selection!

I think a better suggestion is that I pay for your gas to drive to my house in the western suburbs so that you can tell me how to fix everything that has gone wrong with my system recently. I'm always learning from your posts here even though I can't seem to catch up to the quick movement in the page count of this thread! Right now I'm removing the CA reactor media from my frag tank since it's most likely a phosphate sink and also the 9" DSB from my refugium. Thanks for all the information you share here, I'm finding it valuable to my system as well!

Sara, just on the off chance that Mr. Wilson doesn't know.......even though he knows everything you should have him step through your thread which would be very helpful. I have been following along (I believe they call it lurking) and feel for your trials and tribulations. I'm trying to benefit from whatever it is you do to keep your spirits up when the 'fish chips' are down. Nice to have you drop by..............

Thanks Peter, I'll shoot him a PM with a link to my RC tank thread as I don't want to litter your thread with the link to mine! Thanks for following my thread as well ... don't be a lurker all the time ;)

I'm trying to catch up on this thread, but it seems to be like like a fast moving sports car! I can't ever seem to catch up!
