Hello Peter,

Sorry to hear about the flood in the fishroom! As lots of others have noted its just one of those things that happens to everyone. I have used a shopvac to clean up spills as well but I actually really prefer using my "sump pump" type unit for signifcant spills. Just plug it in and feed the hose to the drain it then skips the draining of the shop vac multiple times as it fills.

Just a suggestion,

Patrick

dont forget to do a no power test,to see how high your resevoir goes ,check for siphon breaks, if there isnt any create some, dont depend on generator and check valves, floods only happen when your not at home or sleeping.
:beachbum:welcome to the flood club.
you can get your alarm company to install a flood alarm, and also a temp alarm.theyll call you when theres a problem. chubb does this not sure about others.

Thanks VIC, we are planning on a bunch of disaster tests so great minds think alike. The fishroom will probably be the most 'alarmed' area in the whole house which is saying a great deal. We decided to wait on final configuration and activation untill the first full production infrastructure was stable. We will also be putting the back up generators under similar trials and circumstances. Glad you are paying attention to the nitty gritty. Keep those cards and letters coming.

Peter,

I am applying for the position of "fish room girl".

My undergraduate degree is in zoology and I currently work as a scientist in the pharmaceutical industry. I am an expatriate Canadian, know my way around Toronto and have extensive experience with domestic saltwater flooding.

I have never used vodka pellets, but would be happy to give Scotch pellets a thorough testing.

Are the heels a requirement? I am already 6 feet tall and I'd hate to fall over while mopping (the Scotch pellets might make me tipsy).

My fish room girls do not do 'mops' or windows for that matter. They mostly shop for fish and corals but the Bentley must be back before midnight! The Brothers Grimm are the only ones to get their hands wet.

Since you are the first to apply for the position I would have to say you have a good chance since it appears that the ratio of fish guys to fish girls is about 7,000 to 1. I believe there are only three women in the entire forum so your chances are very very good.

Thanks for the updates Peter. I am not experienced enough to add to this thread technically, but I can say that I am learning a ton! I noticed the thread was over a half a million views, that is just a staggering number to me, although if I only get to look at one thread a day, it's this one. Thank you again for documenting this the way you have, I can imagine how time consuming it is to keep up, let alone the project you have going on, your commitment is truly appreciated.

First up, thank you very much for your generous praise. One of the primary objectives I had at the outset of this build was to grow a community of committed partners in this project who might help to reduce the inevitable risks associated with someone of my limited experience undertaking a project of this magnitude. I can honestly say that to date the reality of that hope has far exceeded my expectation in that regard. Apart from the obvious boost to my ego the truth is that you folks are having a material impact on the outcome. Again this really is our tank and I am very, very proud of the results to date. I have to say, you folks are incredible and somehow I will put the names of all the contributers into the credits for the movie!!!

It is not lost on me that 500,000 visits is a huge number by anyone's measure. The other number I am sensitive to is the thread rating wich is also an enormous endorsement of integrity for this group. The best part of all this support is that the pace and quality of the next phases of this build are about to increase exponentially. I will be sharing some good news in the very near future.

First I have to correct a number of deficiencies before we move on.

Thank you muttley,

Peter

Hey now!

Where do we send the Resume's?

I've been to Canada on occasion, does that count?

I'm fairly tall with heels, but if needed, I can still climb a ladder with heels on!

Equal opportunity employer?

I'd even take Mrs. Nineball out on shopping excursions!

:D

Thanks Christina.........you definately have an edge with the heels on ladders in an emergency! Im not sure how equal but definately an oportunity. The fact that you know the difference between a shopping center and a fish tank will bring you well into the ranks of the leading candidates.

There will be more info so hang in there. I'm hoping you know about clowns as well. that will also be an asset.

Now we have a Foundation for a new Challenge / Venture that Peter has defined in this statement for himself.
As I read between the lines, Peter has stepped back from a very successful Software enterprise.
His insight/skills have evolved here on Reef Central into a thread of historic proportions at this stage of the build.

As we all know { or should } there really is not "one" way to be a masochist to this "Hobby" in doing it right.
Peter, with his "Touch" has brought some measure of finite clarity by attracting to this site/him maestros with great experience, chingchai, Mr.Wilson, Cap'n Hiliner and so many more, that lessen the inevitable stumbling blocks so inherent in this.
When I first got into this saltwater thing in the 70's, I used a lot of methodologies from Europe, particularily Holland which were quite different from North American. Now a lot of European "salt" has migrated to N.A., however they di still have some diverse concepts that hopefully will join into this "Peter's Post" as you move forward into Coral's and livestock husbandry where they seem tobe somewhat different from the North American "norm???" Hopefully more from across the pond will chime in.

So Peter, this evolution underway. is to have an important impact on the free wheeling discussion our "Hobby" { along with Cap'n Hiliner's log of it and Mr.Wilson's new book }, and as "Chairman of the Board" you have your work cut out for you!

LOL! That got my day going!

Mine too. There are times when I wish we could throw political correctness out the window............unfortunately with the worldwide 'family friendly' thread community I have to remember that kids are tuning in. I need to make sure their education remains in the realms of fish and cars.............. I think we need another thread.

Having said that, any woman wearing a 'Peter's fish room girl' badge would have to be one of the most respected and sought after resources on the entire Reef Central Forum if not the industry!!!!

I can sub in on the weekends so the full-timers get a break too, just need travel expenses reimbursed.

I'm versed in saltwater tanks with my share of of water spills. I also know Koi ponds and landscaping so that will make the Mrs. happy...just don't make me babysit the teddy bears is all I ask ;)

I also am well versed in the 1/4 mile at the drag strip and also with sactioned autocrossing and road racing. You won't need to worry one bit about the car as she will be in good hands!

Oh, I like wine too but am pretty fond of the red icewines!
