Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank)

These fish will be in the Mars Bars for at least 8 weeks before making it to the display tank. Some of the fish will remain in the mars bars either because they can't mix with the intended community or because they will form the base of a fish room secondary display tank.


I will defer to Mr. Wilson for names and details of the selection so far.........

I just dropped on of the two spot gobies in my tank Saturday. He seemed fine, but found his remains while doing a water change Sunday . I need to figure out a quarantine tank as well, just not sure where to put it.

I happened to be there when the frog fish (Mr. Wilson's common name) shed its skin. It took all of one second.........it was sort of like a mini explosion!!

Is this particular fish going to colour up now, or is he supposed to be all white like that?

Is that a blue spotted jawfish? They're great! I have one in my tank and he has a ton of personality. You can always tell what their attention is focused on.

So far I am really pleased with the flow with the three pumps and I am looking forward to bringing the other two pumps on line on Wednesday.

Still no noise sitting in front of the aquarium.

It's looking great Peter! Everything is coming together nicely. Taking your time always pays off, it seems.

I've only used t5 lighting before, so I don't have much experience with the lighting you have in mind. However, just based on what I'm seeing, I really like the color that the LEDs are giving off, but I also dig the rays and resulting shimmer effect you would get from the MH lights. The plasma definitely seems very, very yellow. It's too bad the PAR reading is too low for the LEDs, because they do look very nice, and I imagine you'd have a wider range of control over the lights than the MHs. I of course assume the you will have supplemental actinic lighting with he MHs, but dang, that light the LEDs are casting looks perfect for the tank!

The fish was red in the shipping bag and purple once he got into the tank. He turned a pale pink/purple colour after a few days. We might switch the substrate to black sand so he colours up.

the led's and the MH looks great but that plasma looks terrible and doesn't look like it spreads the light very far either. It also doesn't look as bright and if you have to turn it down to get the proper color i don't think your going to have enough par to grow much anything. What fixtures were you using for each?

About a zillion pages ago there was some discussion about Mr Wilson's book. As a complete noob, I've really appreciated his clear and informative comments, so I did a cut-and-paste on (most) of his posts on this thread. It runs to 64 pages - not quite a first draft manuscript, but maybe halfway there. I tried to offer him a copy via PM in the hope it would encourage him to finish the draft, but apparently he's better as keeping his tanks clean and tidy than his inbox, which is full.

We don't want to publish anything negative about fixtures and lamps that don't work for us, as they may work well for other applications. I ca tell you that the MHl fixture is a 400 watt mogul Aqua Medic pendent with a 1250K lamp, and the plasma is a non-dimmed Seashine 290 watt fixture by Straylight.

I'm wondering about your thoughts on the pink cuke I saw in the MARS systems. I'm always hesitant to use these types of detrivores as I know they are EXTREMELY effective, there is still the chance of it wiping out all the fish in the tank. I was always under the impression that the pink cukes and tiger tails were very unlikely to wipe out a tank, but there are numerous examples of this happening here on reef central. Most I've seen were with the pink cuke, but I've seen one or two with the tiger tail as well. It seems with the best of designed tanks the odds are definitely in your favor, but do you still worry about the risk?

Many people are even bleaching corals because they are so strong and need to be run with the white's at a lower percentage and hung 1-2 feet off the water. The price is insane, but as competition ramps up I'm hoping they will become more reasonable when I finally put together another tank.
