Coralife Power center Timer

Are these bad? My wife thinks she heard somewhere they catch on fire. Looking for a decent power strip w/ timer setup.

I had one that went bad after a month. It was stuck in the on position. I have heard similar horror stories of them catching on fire.

I just got 2 digital timers from Home Depot in Orange City. I use a splitter type thingie that plugs in to it and can take up to 3 things to plug into it. They were only $7.50, the cheapest Ive seen and they have battery back up. I think they are left over from the holidays. I know its not a strip, but I just thought I d share.

I had posted the same question in the new hobby forum on here, and got mixed opinions about the ones that catch on fire. See Sy, I told you I read that ones DO catch on fire. Your wifey isnt completely nuts : )

ive seen and heard of them catching fires to a few people, they may have fixed it, but I wouldnt mess with them at all, go with the stuff from home depot.

Here are a few replies I got from the other forum:

ive heard from different people, about all the power centers catching fire. And some for no other reason then it was tuesday.

There is a tread on RC that someone did have a Coralife Power Center cause a fire. I have read it, just after I purchased it. The user maintained that no water got into the power strip. The user also said that they smelled something burning and thought it was the heat pump in their house. The fire caused the tank to break with put out the fire after some substantial damage to their home. I will see if I can find the link for you. I have been using mine which is the digital power center and everything is great. I personaly do not like the way the timers work. they limit the amount of options you really have.

I heard it was the dual analog (dial) type. I'm still using one single analog type and also have three digital ones. Had a dual analog, but threw it out.

So Sy, please dont risk burning down our house :)

I'd steer clear of them...I've heard a lot of negative comments about them (fires, not working after only a short period of time, etc). I use the Home Depot timers, possibly the same ones Val is talking about (although "splitter type thingy does leave some room for interpretation), on systems I don't have a controller on (IMO controllers are the way to go if you can afford one). Even with the enormous humidity issues I deal with all the time, the Home Depot timers have been very reliable.

Please please please dont burn the house down, & the fish really dont like the higher temps that a fire might cause as well!!
