Coralife RO unit doesnt make sense

OK, I want to flush my RO membrane. I have a 4 stage unit, water goes through the first two stages and into to ro membrane housing with a yellow tube. From the ro membrane (3rd stage) there is a red tube and a blue tube. The red tube is waste water and the blue tube goes into the DI resin. Here are the instructions from coralife on how to flush the membrane.

"Membrane efficiency and life expectancy may be improved by flushing the membrane regularly. The easiest way to achieve this is to switch the two outlet fittings on the bottom of the membrane housing. By placing the wastewater fitting (red tube) in the purified water outlet and the purified water fitting (blue tube) in the wastewater outlet, the system can be flushed. After switching the fittings, the unit should be operated for approximately 15 minutes."

Their instructions only have the two outlets switched, what the heck would that do other than putting my waste water through the DI resin? Either Coralife and drsfostersmith.com have the wrong instructions or I'm totally missing something.

this sounds like an ad for airwaterice :P.

I tried to make sense of what your problem was but I am not running on enough sleep today.

I just got off the phone with the maker. The instructions left out that you should disconnect the DI resin. The instructions also left out that you must switch around the elbows that are connected to the outlets. One of the elbows contains the flow restrictor, once that restrictor is switched around there is 100% flow over the membrane which is supposed to clean the exterior of the membrane.

Personally, that doesnt much sound like flushing to me, sound more like a dusting off. Thanks for the link Phil, I will probably end up getting a flush kit like that. Seems like it would serve more of a purpose vs just running water over the membrane.
