Coraline Algae Bad?

I read in this book below that coraline algae is a calcium sink. I have tons of these all over my rock and glass and I do notice my calcium being unstable (I keep my pH at 8.2 and I only dose - no reactors).

So my question is, I always thought coraline algae was the IT. Products like Purple Up were created precisely for that. So would a reef tank be better without coraline algae? I mean, coraline algae does suck. It makes the whole tank look purple. And my two sea urchins are too slow.

When I am in the mood, I scrub the coraline off the glass. But that's once a year that I feel that way.

What's the truth about this?

Just curious, if this book is saying that coraline is somehow a bad thing, does it give suggestions on how to inhibit it?

BTW, I have always used coraline growth as an indicator that my tank is healthy/balanced (Calc/Alk/Mg in range and phosphates low).

for most coralline algae is a good sign of a maturing tank, for me its a pain in the @ss, the tank looks purple, hard to get off, consumes calcium, looks nice on rock but i hate when it covers my pumps..

I've got one of these Easy Blade attachments glued to an old Mag-Float cleaner.

I wish I would have picked one of these up years ago. Awesome tool!!

I love Coraline personally...the purple rocks are beautiful. If you have alot of problems with it on glass though...try to reduce the flow over your glass and direct more to rocks...it grows on glass very fast with a lot of flow...I konw that's hard to avoid.
