coraline algae

Does anyone here feel purple up will help my zooids?
I am trying to boost my coraline algae and i have heard/read good things about purple up...any thoughts out there?

I think you'd be better served to start dosing some Kalkwasser in your top of water(1tsp. per gallon of RO/DI water), I like Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime for this.

+1 to dripping kalk and you wouldn't believe the growth, I have coralline algae that grows into caps in my tank :)

I really like what Randy wrote!!!
Normal Ca++ and alk!
Little more Mg than needed, to boost.
Low phosphates and low organics.

You can add a kalk reactor to the system. I wouldn't add a calk reactor if you already have a CO2 calcium reactor. I prefer kalk than the CO2 deal.
Set the kalk for night time when pH is low, dripping and all that we know already...

I guess you've meant zoanthids, not "zooids". The zoanthids would love the good alkalinity. I would forget the Purple Up and go with the real stuff.

That is an impressive picture!!!
Love it!

My tank has coralline on the back glass but after a while it detaches and falls. I thing the weight of my Turbos breaks them off at night. Yes, my kalk reactor is what helps and that's the only reason I've got it. I also add .5ml of Mg 3 times a week.

How do you add the kalk? How often you mix and change the old powder from the bottom? Reactor?
Thanks for sharing!!

That stuff is crap!-just maintain your CA & Alk at good consistant levels & it'll come in time. If you can't test for it don't put it in your tank. Remember only bad things happen fast in reef tanks. don't rush it & let nature take it's course.

sweet thanks a ton for the info after deployment i plan on building a 120 gal with a 55 gal sump the only fish i plan on keep are two clowns and a yellow tang maybe a purple tang as well as a flame angel.

That is very cool. Did it start off as that growth pattern or did it develop due to flow etc.?

I had some beginning in my little tank but after I dosed H2O2 it turned white and died. I hope that it will return now that I am almost finished fighting the GHA.

It's some weird species that just grows that way, not sure if it's super common or what but I'd never seen it before. What's really cool is seeing it start to appear all over the tank now, definitely adds some nice texture to the rocks :)

My coraline is mostly growing on the walls, with a small amount on the rocks. How can i switch that? aside from manual grafting

Along with the scraping, you might also try turning your return pump off while leaving your circulating pump running and use a mag float to scour your existing coraline. This should help get it suspended into the water column, and to get some into your rocks. If you do this for about a half hour before your feeding time, when you shut your circulating pumps down too, more of it should settle onto your rocks. Having said all this, you still need to have good water param's. with the proper levels of Ca, Mg and Alk, and low to undetectable levels of PO4 and NO3 for optimal growth.

let it grow over time....coraline ruins everything in your tank from your rock to equipment, theres gonna come a time when your going to see coraline as a problem like most do.

Please elaborate. I know it can be a pain keeping the front glass clean and it uses up Alk and Calcium, but what are some other issues with it. Equipment?

Scrape the glass, brake down the coralline into tiny particles and sprinkle over the rocks. Drive some of the water flow to it and make sure the water params and light are fine for the coralline to grow there.

yes it gets tiresome after the years of cleaning equipment from coraline , same with bubble traps in the sump.

ive seen a few tanks just about ruined from encrusting coraline.

now dont get me wrong it takes good conditions to get coraline to skyrocket off, and its def the better color to have but i get rid of any i see when ever i can , i let it grow on the rocks nauturally.

urchins or even chitons can help keep the coraline on your rock in check but they can also leave little marks behind as well.

if your conditions are right coraline will grow well without having to try anything extra you can also add diversity by adding coral or small pieces of liverock from other tanks.

Purple Up works for me my coraline starting growing on rocks after month one if dosing it took the month go see benifits but after that it grew like crazy and my tank was only 8 weeks old so if it worked for me I should work for anyone I think people say it don't work cause they don't give it fair time to prove itself if u can wait 2-4 and dose everyday those days you'll see purple or pink spots starting on your rocks at least I did just had to rose it faithfully for a month not to say its the best way but it most definitely worked for me but kalk is a cheaper method I'm sure and will work also but at marinedepot.com u can get a 16oz bottle of purple up for $12.99 at least that's what I got it for 6 months ago but you do have to seed the coraline by putting a live rock or something with coraline on it already as it doesn't seed it but it accelerates growth I'm sure there's others that hate it and everything but it worked for me like I said its worth trying my opinion just gotta be patient for a few weeks but what I did was use up the 16oz bottle then switched to kalk drip when it ran out to maintain and continue growth but a person could continue dosing it alone as it has many of your main trace elements so it saves having to buy a bunch a different bottles of the other stuff also anyway just my 2 cents worth on my experience with it
