Coraline Algae

if your not messing with coral you can use purple up to boost the growth, i had some and it really worked well. it just spikes your calcium levels so im not sure if i would use it with coral.

Your coraline growth will depend on what you keep your calcium level at and what type of lighting you have.

Hey Imracing, I'm having the same challenge you are. My LFS (and others) say the same. Keep the calcium and alkaline levels in par and coupled with your lighting and time, it should start to take off. I've been told it could take a couple of months.

As for the Purple Up, I posted a thread on here for it. You can get the opinions of others. (I'll probably still try it but my LFS says it's a waste of money if my calcium levels are okay). Sorry I can't find the link to my thread as the search feature is down. When it comes back up, you can search for "Purple Up" and it should find it. But suffice it to say most people agreed that if your calcium levels are good, then Purple Up isn't needed.

If the tank is new, then you should be seeing something in at least a few weeks, but it could be longer. If your rock had some coralline on it to begin with, it'll come back. You shouldn't have to add anything.

Not trying to hijack but does anyone know if coralline can be "seeded"? As in, if your new rock has little or no coralline on it, you can place a piece covered with it, into the tank to help it spread...assuming your levels are in check...

my tank has been up for close to a year and am just now starting to see a little corraline. if you start with base rock (as i did with rock from my old tank that was dried out) it will take forever. i also bought some LR from the fish store that was covered in coraline, and i even scraped the back out the fish stores main display that was covered in corraline when they broke it down.i used purple up and it had my Ca all the way to 600 and better. i have basically given up on corraline and now it decides to start growing. hey pay shipping and ill give you a 3/4 big bottle of purple up.

I'd stay away from purple up personally. There are much better methods of keeping your alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium in balance. Start with diligent weely water changes since you are running a fowlr and watch your alkalinity. Coralline is one of those things that just takes time. ;)

Can anyone give me a guesstimate on how long it takes for coraline algae to reproduce and spread?

Kinda like watching water boil ... going to happen when it happens.

yes, that would work to seed base rock.

Sweet. Believe it or not a local Petco has a nice piece, with about 85-95% of it covered with coralline...hopefully it'll fit in my tank. :D

agreed

i have been told......never ever put anything in your tank that cant be tested for(exceptions include food ect)

Since you are running a FOWLR tank, it would probably be cheaper and easier to use a salt known to have good Ca levels like Reef Crystals instead of the testing and using additives to the tank. As long as you do weekly water changes, you should keep the Ca and Alk in a range that the coraline will be happy with.

A cheaper way to keep calcium higher is to use 2 parts Oceanic and one part "other" marine salt, such as IO or something similar. Oceanic has VERY high levels of calcium, almost too high, but if you cut it down by 1/3 it is great!!! I use Oceanic and IO in combination......
