Coraline Algae

I'm just curious, what is the normal time it would take for Coraline Algae to totally take over my rock.

This is what I have so far, four of the semi-large pieces were from Premium Aquatics and filled with Coraline.

Thanks in advance.

After 7 weeks I am just starting to see small spots of coralline show up. I imagine it will take another couple of months to be partially covered. Make sure your CA, ALK and MG levels are good.

I think that it is different from tank to tank as there are a lot of factors involved. lighting and photoperiod to start, you will get faster growth with more wattage and a longer photoperiod. If you have a large clean up crew, the algae will be consumed before it has a chance to "purple up". I have found that if you keep up on your Iodine in combination with at least a ten hour photoperiod with medium lighting and good flow, it could take upwards of a year to completely cover your rocks and the glass. Like I said, it is diffent for everyone. TinMan

A LONG time! I'm still waiting and my calc + alk are fine. Someone on here says it's like watching water boil - it'll happen when it's ready. :)

I also had an urchin in my tank and I believe he was eating any of mine that started to form. Needless to say he's found a happy home at the LFS. :D

I see you have the green algae. That's a good sign. I don't see that much coraline on your LR though. You might want to get a piece of LR with coraline on it as it spreads from existing spores. Good luck.

Hey guys, what about Purple Up? *cough*snake oil*cough*

I'm thinking of using it. But many (including my LFS) says it's not worth it. But I'm getting desperate. I'm about to buy purple spray paint and paint the inside of my tank!

My Liverock was covered in coraline but my lights are pretty intense so they bleached it out. So I hope for it to come back soon.

Here is an example

coralline sux... you dont want it :D It may stay on the rocks for a while but once it starts covering the glass its a pain. I have been diving several times and I have yet to see rocks that are "purple". I really wouldn't wish this scourge on anyone.
