just curious.. when Coraline algae starts to form does immediately start as the purple algae it is, or does it start as a phase of algae before hand then take on its purple color? Just wondering
There are a lot of different types of coraline algae and they will sart and only be what they are. IME it seems that purple algae a lot of times might be a stronger strain and will cover, say, a green coraline algae.
I have seen some coraline that seems to grow more rapidly start as a light purple that follows the texture of a rock it is on. It has almost an airbrush look. As a tank gets older, the species seem to diversify, my favorite is the kind that kind of sheets over rocks but it takes forever to grow...
The plating varieties rival the looks of the biggest Monti Caps IMO. Also the branching types are pretty awesome. Sometimes with a new rock, you will get it home and it's all covered in green sheets that fade to white, and then turn to pink and purple. This is just the green algae dying off and pink or purple taking over, not actually changing color
