Coralline Algae

Eel Freak

Fimbriated Moray
Hi!

I have had my nano reef (29 gallons) since September 3rd of 2007. I STILL have not had my coralline take off. It is there, just not growing or anything.

All params are perfect and calcium is around 400.

All help is appreciated! Thanks!

i had problems until i switched salt brands to one for a reef rather than just a salt water tank... try checking your magnesium and calcium levels

[welcome]

keeping your alk at 11.5 will also help plus you can take some scrappings from another tank and seed yours with them

Use a turkey paster when someone scrapes the corraline from the glass on their tanks and suck some of the water up with it

When I finally got around to testing my Mg it was at 1000. Once I got it up to 1400 that made a world of difference with my coraline growth.

Check out the chemistry forum for info on balancing Ca, Alk and Mg. Also how to make your own Mg mix. It takes a lot to raise the levels and can get expensive if your buying commercial products. Also the large doses required to bring up the Mg will raise salinity so keep and eye on that as well. The good news is once you get where it belongs it's easy to keep there and doesn't take much dosing.

Thanks for such a quick response!

I am running a Coralife Aqualight at 65w. I replaced the bulb in June. I have been using Reef Crystals for my salt.

I'll have to get test kits for magnesium and alkalinity. I'll have to check out the Chemistry forum as well... Thanks for all the help!

Reef Crystals should have sufficient levels of Ca, Mg and Alk to promote coraline growth. That's all I use in my Nano tank, and there's coraline growing all over. I think the secret is live rock that already has some coraline growth. If you can get your hands on even a 5-10 lb rock like this, it should help. I've never tried taking coraline scrapings from someone else's tank, but I've heard it suggested many times, and it certainly seems like something that could work.

As for the test kits, I'd still get them. The magnesium kit probably isn't very important if you're not planning on keeping stony corals, though. Although I have learned recently that coraline actually uses more magnesium than coral skeletons.

I just picked up 6lbs of Keys Live Rock yesterday. It is absolutely COVERED in coralline. Thanks for the help!

coralline is a good indicator for stability.

it is the first thing that turns white in my tank every time i decide to change the flow or lighting schedule.

it doesn't require much light, but a minimum amount is needed. my 5G that has 2x18W PC lights above it is absolutely covered with the stuff :)
