corals and mantis

What would be the best type of coral to keep with a mantis shrimp. If the mantis would be too destructive then I'm not going to worry about it.

most mantids are not destructive of coral at all. only thing in danger would be inverts obviously and the odd frag. all frags shold be attached or glued to something (like a rock) that cant be moved by the mantis. providing LR rubble for construction material helps.

there are however some mantids that make their homes in sps in the wild. so to be safe, i would avoid large sps colonies that might seem appealing as a home (like acropora... i think encrusting or plating coral should be fine). most any lps and softies should be just fine (my G. smithii doesnt bother mine).

I keep softies and Zoas/shrooms in my mantis reef.
As song as the mantis youend up with isn't one that makes its home in corals the biggest danger is the mantis deciding that a coral frag would look better in its home instead of out where everyone can see. If you solidly glue your frags down it shouldn't be a major concern.

I keep a wennerrae with all sorts of corals. It will pick loose rocks and tinny frags and use that to build their home. I have not seen him destroying any corals that I have.

My mantis tank had a variety of zoanthids and mushrooms. Never bothered them one bit. Whenever I found an evil invert they would get thrown into my Mantis tank. So fun seeing them hunt something down.
