i read a list for this somewhere, might of been on another website though. but now cant find it

i know anemones arent recommended for begginers for for tanks that are under 1 year old. so my question is which corals will host to the clown fish.

so far i know that frogspawn, torch and even duncan can host clownfish.

Hammers and frogspawn are relatively easy to care for and can be hosted. My clowns didn't take to them though. Its hit or miss, never a garuantee. I've been told to post pictures of clowns hosting corals on the side of your tank to give them a clue. It's worked for some people I know. I guess my fish are clueless.

Actually the original question was posted correctly: corals/anemones HOST clowns, clowns ASSOCIATE with corals/anemones.

Gonipora is readily accepted by smaller clowns. They don't seem to really like the clowns and don't extend fully but gonipora can be harder to keep than an anemone.

Euphyllia species like torch, frogspawn, hammer, bubble etc. are all good choices though it could be hit or miss if the clowns take to them or not. On the plus side they tend to be pretty forgiving starter corals.

The clowns don't need a host to be happy. They do perfectly well in the absence of an anemone. Its a wonderful behavior to observe, them gently fanning the tentacles and feeding their host. If its something you want to see go ahead and try an anemone.

Bubble tips are pretty hardy. For your first one try to get a large well expanded green bubble tip. The greens are usually about a third the cost of reds so its not such a major hit if it does't make it. The bigger the anemone the better chance the clowns will take to it and the better chance it has to withstand the clown.

My tank raised Occ just jumped into my fuzzy mushrooms tonight!:bounce1: So I guess you can add that to the list. Just something he decided to do overnight on its own so dont try to force or rush things when the time is right they will go in on their own.

Don't expect your clowns to use a coral as a host. It does happen, but clowns make up their own minds and use whoever or whatever they want as a host. You could put in the right anemone, but that doesn't mean the clowns will use it. Whatever you choose to do, good luck.

Toadstool leathers (Sarcophyton spp.) also make good substitute "anemone". They're hardy and tend to adapt well to hosting.

This is true. Clowns may or may not host something. My clowns at one point would host a red solo cup I used for mushrooms.

Yup. My perculas have their choice of 2 RBTA, 2 big hammer colonies, a large frogspawn, a huge toadstool leather and a good size fiji yellow leather... but they don't use any of them as a host. But in my nem tank, a cinnamon/tomato pair use a purple tip condy as their host... South Pacific clowns in a Caribbean anemone. There is just no way to know for sure.

My 2 clowns, I think they are being hosted by my glass thermometer...

I hear tank bred clowns may never host anything like they might on the reef.

well thanks guys. i have decided to go with corals that will please me rather than trying to please the clowns :lol2:
