Cost of salt per gallon... Who's cheapest?

Jamokie - that number just happens to be natural seawater, or SG=35. I target the same number when I make up sw, and indeed it takes more salt.

yes; i'm targeting natural seawater.

upon further reflection, i should also mention that for years i was relying on a floating glass hydrometer, supposedly calibrated to 78 degrees farenheit. over last christmas holidays i got a pinpoint salinity meter, and shortly after that a refractometer to sanity check that. i found that old trusty floating glass hydrometer was either always off or had gone off over the years, and i'd been keeping things at more like 1.028-1.029 for god knows how long. it turns out that doesn't affect your livestock adversely, but it probably does mean my observations about how much water you can actually make out of a bucket of salt are significantly skewed.
