I am soooo hooked and have been reading this whole forum and am going to order a mantis on Monday. My question is, would a 7 gallon bowfront with hob filter be enough for one... at least while they are smaller? I wouldnt think they would need a fuge or anything. Thanks guys!

N. wennerae are common hitchikers on Florida live rock, and are a great species for smaller tanks. I have one in a 12 gallon nano cube, have had it a while and it has grown to close to 3". I could see it being happy in a tank about half the size. Just watch water quality carefully.

Where are you ordering it from?

Ive been searching for a good place to order from, so far I've looked at liveaquaria and then also a place about 45 minutes from my house that does wholesale fish sales.... figured they might get them in on live rock every once in a while.... Have any suggestions?

marinedepot.com sells them sometimes, as well as tbsaltwater.com. TBS has N. Wennerae for $40 shipped, and you could stick one of those in a 5G tank. Really, you'd only need to spend a total of $50-60ish on the whole setup (mechanically), aside from the LR and shrimp.

They may not be very pretty looking, but they're very active and will give you something to watch...unlike my Platysoma that made a burrow facing the back of the tank and never comes out...

mine is a very pretty deep yellow-green color, and is very active in the tank. it's always moving pieces of rubble around the front of its rock burrow, or smashing the rock to make a bigger house. it is a very fast predator, and its favorite food right now is live fiddler crabs.

it is kind of acrobatic, turning in circles inside its house, then peeking out. if I didn't hear it smashing all day, I would miss it.

I don't think it's dull at all, either in looks or personality.
