Hey all, I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of crab this is? I have a 12g FOWLR/LS it has been up for almost 5 years and it only has 1 perc and some snails and a pep shrimp I added Thursday. I have not added any LR since I set the tank up 5 years ago, so this thing has been in the tank in this LR all these years hubby and I saw him yesterday for the 1st time coming and going out a small hole in a piece of LR. We have never seen any molt from it iether, wierd I know! He is about 1/2" or a bit less, and a brown gray in color I would say. I am planning on making the tank into a Nano but would like to know if he is harmful to a reef. He does have dark tip claws but hard to tell if pointy or not, we can't tell the difference...LOL. Any help with figuring this crab out would be great. Thanks all.

99% on not reef safe based on pic. pls don't kill him as so many do. easy to let him reside in your sump or give him to another reefer for a species tank...

Looks like tiny gorilla or other rock crab species. Will generally pick on crud until they are bigger. Will eat just about anything that fits and become a problem when bigger. I have caught several with just hands as they seem to think they are better holding still about 50% of the time I go in after them. just push down lightly with the fingertip to hold him in place and scootch him into your thumb grip. At this stage he is not trouble, but get him when you have an opportunity.
