Couple of questions

For the past year now my Clarkii pair have been spawning and lay 2-3 batches of eggs each month. I haven't had the time to attempt raising any of the young so the eggs have just hatched out each time in my display tank. I guess the guilt is eating at me so I talked to my LFS guy last week and he said he'd love for me to bring in the eggs just before hatching and he'd try and raise them. My first question is is this possible? Transfering the eggs quite a distance I mean. I know if I had a set up here at home I could easily swap the eggs over to a little tank just before hatching but will they likely survive being bagged and transfered to my LFS? Second question I have is regarding the rock my clown pair lay the eggs on. I've read where people put a tile in and the clowns lay on it but I don't have any small tiles here at home. Plus I'm a little concerned about putting something like tile in my tank because of what could possibly leech out into my tank. Does anyone have a suggestion of something known to be safe that would be a regular household item I could put in there today? I'd like to catch their next batch so I need to figure something out rather quickly. They're last batch of eggs hatched last night so they should be spawning again within a day or so. What's the best method to try and get them to lay on the new item? Just put it over their spot on the rock?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The eggs may or may not make the trip depending on how long it is. The important thing would be to keep the water warm. The motion of the car would probably be enough to keep the eggs moving.

I am not aware of any toxins in a plain ceramic tile that could damage your tank. I have used a piece of broken tile for over a year and there are hundreds of breeders using ceramic flower pots with no problem. Just go to home depot and ask if they have any broken tiles you could have or buy 1 for $1.00 and break it to a suitable size.

Here is a pic of the tile in my tank.

I read through (most of) your thread after posting my questions and saw your tile pictures. Is your tile finished on one side? All I have is large whole tiles that were extra from our kitchen and entry way and I doubt my husband would be happy with me smashing one of them. I do have some small terra cotta pots though. Those will work? Or I can have my husband run by Home Depot tomorrow.

After spending some time this afternoon reading your info and other articles I'm interested in possibly trying to raise some of the fry myself. (Not that I've come across a bunch of spare time but I'm really interested in trying this out) I notice that your breeding setup contains quite a few tanks. Is what you have a large set up or is it on the smaller end of the scale? I ask because there's no way I could start setting up that many tanks in my laundry room but I could get by with some two liter bottles and a couple 10 gallon tanks. If I'd need as many tanks as you have I can just stop reading up on this whole venture right now!

Thanks for your time!

jackson MS lol I would start with phyto first. you will have to have it first. you will have to grow your own are go with instant. instant is high which drives alot of people to culturing there on, but simple. then you will need to culture rotifers. see if you can get this book. it will help you a lot ClownFishes by joyce wilkerson

My setup is small compared to others I have seen. But in no way do you have to come even close to that. Most of those tanks are for broodstock not growout.

Yes the tile I have is finished on the other side. A pot would work just as well. If you are going to try it I would suggest Instant Algae over growing your own phyto. The time savings is pretty large. Rotifers seems to be always a problem for me! I get them going good and then they always crash just when I need them. If there was one thing that will help you to be succesful is get the hang of rotifers.
