Have 150 gallon mixed reef, established for nearly 4 years.
For my birthday I treated myself to a couple new fish, from LA.
The others are doing great, all peaceful and getting along. The Koumansetta rainfordi arrived last Tuesday, looking good. It was about 2" long, much smaller than I've seen them. It seemed to be settling in just fine: good color; upright fins; alert; curiou; eating algae and even chose a bolt hole. He ignored the other fish and they ignored him. I saw him today busily chomping algae and I saw him literally 2 hours later, hermit crabs eating him.
What happened? Did the hermits attack him? They are very small, the largest are dime sized. The gobie's belly wasn't sunken, like internal parasites or anything. The only thing I can think of, if it wasn't the hermits, was one of the corals had some sweepers out in the area where the Goby had his bolt hole. Did he get stung?
Really like that fish, but hesitate getting another if they are known for running into sweeper tentacles.
