Covering a 125G Stand

I know that it has been a while but here are a few recent shots of my tank

If it's not one thing it's another, I have been battling cyanobacteria for some time now, it has become a weekly routing to blow off all the rock with a turkey baster. I really didn't want to treat the tank with antibiotics to remove it, so I turned to Dr Tims products in hopes to get rid of this nasty infestation.

When I was at one of SFVR club meetings, Dr Tim was there giving a talk about aquarium test kits, but when the floor was open for questions it quickly turned to his products. A question was asked about cyano and he has a schedule of products that claim to get rid of this stuff. Another person in the audience spoke up and saying that it worked and he continues to have great success with it.

So a month and a half, two months later I contact Dr Tim(I know, I like to research and be sure before I jump in to anything) And because he doesn't allow anyone in his lab, I had meet him at a fast food restaurant where we sat in the parking lot discussing these products. And anytime I have the chance to bend the ear of an expert I take the opportunity, we talked about bacteria and it's many roles facets of life in and out of the aquarium. Very interesting to say the least.

Anyway, I bought an 8oz bottle of re-fresh and a 32oz bottle of Waste Away. Hoping that this will cure the cyano problem in the tank.

The schedule that he set for my 125 gallon is 3 separate doses 2 days apart of Re-Fresh at 2.6oz each, then 2 days later start with 1oz of Waste Away and if the tank doesn't cloud up 2 days later increase to 2oz, then 3oz and then 4oz. after that point set the dosing to 4oz a week from here on out.

The weekend before I started, I blew off all the cyano and this is what has grown back a week later. Dr Tim says to blow off as much cyano as possible before starting so I did so, only leaving 1 patch to see if it will erode away. I also took a pic of a patch of hair algae to see if it does anything to that.

This is the patch that I am going to leave:

Here's a 10 day follow up. After making it through the 3 treatments of the re-fresh, and 3 treatments of waste away, here is a pic of the one patch of cyano that I left alone.

This is before treatment:

and this is 10 days into the treatment.

an obvious conclusion is that the cyano looks thicker and fuller than before and it appears to be pulling apart.

However what you don't see is that the places that I blew the cyano off of hasn't came back, this past weekend I would have been blowing patches like you see in the picture off from everywhere. and to be fair Dr Tim said that I should remove as much as I can before starting the treatment.

I'm hoping that progress continues because there are patches of cyano throughout the tank that I can't get to with a turkey baster, so hopefully in the long term it will all disappear.

So in conclusion it certainly appears that a dominant for of bacteria can starve out the food source for cyano. I will continue to update as I progress.

Sister, your tank looks good. AND I'm about 3 yrs late on this, but your stand is great. You got the tools and the skill man !!!! Don't take this wrong, but get rid of that ugly canopy and build yourself one worthy of the stand. You know you can do it...lol. What lights do you run...t5s? Canopy looks real shallow.

He has 4 radions in the hood. It used to be T5's. His canopy is nice in person(not sure why you think its ugly, but I can assure you its not)
Also, I doubt he would rebuild the canopy as he has a 300? Gallon tank in process right now.

Thanks,

I really appreciate your comments, I haven't been working with wood like I use to. This tank is almost done serving its purpose. Like Dwo has said I have a 300 in the works and I'm not really focused on the aesthetics of the 125 tank anymore. I never liked the hood and it never fit the look but I never got around to changing it, it serves its purpose.

As for the lights"¦ yes I changed over to LEDs about 6 months ago and I must say I am extremely pleased with them.

Hey Sister, hope you and the family had a Merry Christmas and will all have a Happy and prosperous New Year. When are you going to start documenting your 300 gal upgrade, can't wait to see what you have planned.

He keeps toying with my emotions saying he is going to start setting it up in the garage... shortly... his shortly is too long

what a beautiful stand! Nice craftsmanship!

I know it is a few years ago, but it I just found it and it is timeless!
