Cowry Shell not Smooth

I have a money cowry. It's a couple years in my tank now. Just noticed that its shell is not smooth. I have never seen any species of cowry without a smooth shell. It kind of looks like calcium build up.
Any suggestions as to why?
Google search hadn't pulled any results
