Cozumel Pics

Hi all-

We've been pretty scarce in these parts lately. One of those reasons is that we were on vacation for the last week. I just got some of my snorkeling pics developed and I thought I'd share a few from that and the cruise more broadly (we left Mobile, went to Cozumel, then to Calica -or Playa Del Carmen, and back to Mobile).

All of the underwater pics are from about 20-60 feet off of the beach right out from 1/2 Senor Frogs (a bar with steps leading down to the water). It was the easiest place to get access to the water and we did not have a ton of time so I did I was very surprised by how much I saw so close to such a busy area. Some of them are a bit blurry, but not too bad overall. BTW visibility was ridiculous good... however you measure that.

Later on the same day I found a place where I could swim around a little farther and get into deeper water far away from the beach (maybe 30-40 feet). Unfortunately I didn't take the camera with me on that little excursion because there was a lot of cool stuff there. I saw a big Brain Coral about the size of a large beach ball and some kind of big branching coral that was a few feet taller than me from top to bottom and about 4-5' in circumference near the base.

One of the pics in that album is of a cavern. We were actually able to snorkel in the cavern and it was awesome. We were swimming through little openings and through stalactites hanging from the ceiling. There were also a bunch of little cave catfish and guppies in there. The water in the cave was amazingly clear and really the whole experience was kind of surreal (not to mention it was something that I don't think they'd ever let you do in the U.S.). I thought I got some underwater pictures of that but apparently my camera ran out of film but let me keep winding it as if it hadn't (boo!). I thought it was a 36 exposure but apparently it was only 24.

Anywho... I hope you all enjoy...

Awesome, man! Thanks for sharing. Looks like you guys had a great time!

And as far as the caves, there are actually a few caves you can go diving in... however, hauling your gear to them is a bit of a pain. :)

Perhaps I should have said... you probably can't find cave diving/snorkeling in the US without special equipment, special permits, special dive instruction, and a certain amount of insanity. :)

I'm not sure what kind it is, but the light blue tang in one of those pictures was a really amazing looking fish. I don't ever recall seeing them in the store, but it was really pretty and if I ever do see one it will be coming home with me.

*In his best Katt Williams voice* I'm just sayin'....

:D

Yeah, that blue tang was amazing in the photo. Maybe we should try to identify it. I'm betting there's probably a reason its not in the hobby, but maybe its attainable. Wonder if it would get along with my future achilles tang? :D

I took a little bit of a look around, but I'm not finding anything that looks exactly like it. Atlantic Blue Tang keeps coming up, but they look a lot darker blue than this one and they have little "stripes" along them. This one was just a light blue over the whole body with maybe a tinge of lavender. It also had darker/brighter blue along some of the edges of the fins (which you can kind of see in the picture). The body shape is very similar to the pics of the Atlantic blue that I'm seeing, but I'm still not convinced. The fish was big enough (maybe 5-6") that I feel like it had to be an adult and not a fish in transition (as quite a few tangs do)... of course, maybe I'm wrong.
