my father has one of those CPR style Backpack skimmer on his tank that he got on eBay for $50... the skimmer is fine and it doubles as a hang on refugium... the only problem is the pump is constatnly making a noise just like the regular CPR... the noise completely disappears when i shut off the air intake valve which tells me that the noise is being caused by the bubbles... the noise is fine for a tank located in the dinning room but it is too noisy for a bedroom... the pump for his skimmer is on of those Maxi Jet style pumps with the air intake located at the same intake where the water enters...
i have an AquaMedic skimmer which is also a hang on skimmer... it is using an Ocean Runner 2000 pump and it is virtually silent... none of that bubbling noise that the CPR style skimmer makes... i was just wondering if the bubbling noise is caused by the different pumps or is it caused by the skimmer's internal design...?right now, i am in need of a refugium to cultivate chaeto but my tank is not drilled... i'm trying to stay away from external overflow if at all possible... what i am thinking of doing is hooking up my Ocean Runner pump to the CPR style skimmer... but i just want to make sure that it is the pump that is making the noise and not the skimmer design...
