cracked, drilled 20H

Anyone have any use for a cracked, drilled 20h? I know it's a stretch, but I figured I'd check before I put it to the curb.

side is drilled and cracked, back is drilled, other side and front are untouched.

Can I ask how the horrid event occurred? Just curious- I already have 2 of these tanks so not looking. But, I've got two holes in one and didn't have any problem, but wondering if your crack developed over time or while drilling.

Neither, really. I drilled the tank fine, no problems there. Then, over the weekend, late one night when I should have just gone to bed - I was fighting with the threads on one of the fittings, put a little too much pressure on the tank, and *crack*

The glass on those are thin...in the future I would recommend using a Silicone grease for the threads, helps a ton.

Can that stuff be purchased locally - lowes or whatever? I glued up the pvc for the new fuge tonight, gotta do the threads on it tomorrow.

not really - was during an initial leak test... couldn't get the threads to seal, was frustrated, etc etc

Are you employing another 20H, or what is your plan? You could probably just fix the one you have with a new side panel. Sounds like you've already put a bit of work into it.

Where was it leaking? At the bulkhead, or at another fitting? I like the thread seal compound as opposed to the tape since it doesn't put as much stress on the fitting if put too much on.

I already bought, drilled and glued up a new one, so the cracked one is going to the curb. It should be going in tonight, so I'll have pictures soon.

So it occurred to me over the weekend...

Any reason I couldn't remove the bulkhead and silicone in a piece of glass to cover the hole and the crack? Then I could use the tank as a mixing tank for new water. Seems like a better idea than just putting it to the curb. I can't imagine a 10x12 piece of glass would be that expensive.

I think that would work perfectly. Just make sure that you gob the $hit out of the piece that your gluing on.

For the hole, yes, however with a crack i would be concerned that it would expand under stress reaching the edge where the failure could turn catastrophic - or best case, a drip rate leak.

for the price of a tank i would be reluctant to try this. how about breaking the tank down and having the glass cut for use as baffles in a sump?

Blurry also brings up a good point that I didn't think of. It may be worth your while to just cut the existing glass apart and use it elsewhere.
