Cracked glass!!!!

So i'm pretty Pi$$ed off right now, The bottom of my newly acquired 150 has a crack about a foot long going through it. The guy that was like "Hey lets use particle board to save money" needs to be ran over with my truck!

Somehow some way water was able to get in between the glass and the stand and bubbled the crap out of the top of the stand. With no where to go but up with the glass it cracked. The tank was empty thank god and in my garage but now im stuck with a useless 150 lee mar euro braced tank, and a stand i want to burn with gasoline very badly.

Please tell me that there is a place out there that is willing to take it in and replace the bottom side of my dream tank.

thanks for reading my rant, now help a useless reefer out.

Man that sucks... I hope the guy you run over is my boss! Please tell me he has a blond mustach with a wack a$$ high top flat top fade?

As for the glass, have you tried calling leemar?

Since i bought this tank used i have no ideas of where to start to getting a hold of leemar. I googled the number and keep getting a bunch of lfs. Anyone have a direct number?

Have you tried new age aquatic's? My 150 starfire had a chip in the front corner, had them replaced that panel a few months ago. you might wanna give them a try.

It should be possible to cut a piece of glass to fit the ID of the tank and simply lay it over the top of the existing cracked glass. Leave a gap on all 4 sides for silicone. The stress should be transfered to the edges of the tank which from your discription should be okay. It would be a lot less expensive than rebuilding the tank.

particle board is the worst type of material they ever could have used for aquarium stands, It is absorbent like crazy. Most stands I have, I have refurbished myself and I have had some really bad ones. but the one's that gave me the most trouble with water damage is that POS material lol. Good luck in getting your panel replaced or how ever you go about it hopefully it's not too much of a hassle or more money.

when the bottom cracks, it's usually because the tank isn't leveled... i doubt that a particle board bubble will go high enough to push the glass up... it's particle board... check if the floor is level... even if one corner is down by .25 inch, it will make a difference... what also could happen is the particle board will sag at one corner and snap the tank in half... that sucks... huge stress crack... if it was a popped seam, they could've fixed it under warranty...

i've also seen tom at carson tropical fish take in tanks to get repaired... he deals with leemar as well... shop around... that sucks....

Man that sucks, but honestly, at least it happened now, I cant even imagine the fiasco it would of been if it happened after the tank was fully stocked! Hopefully you can get a good price on the panel.

That's what I was going to say. Just cut a piece of glass and silicone it down. You can get a piece of glass cut anywhere. I don't see why it wouldn't work. The sand will cover the patch.

This bubble was a little over an inch and was hard as a rock, i have zero doubts that this caused it. It was nasty and at the time sitting level in my driveway. Thanks for your ideas. I have already contacted leemar and should be getting a phone call monday from Brian. My problem now is getting it to Vista CA

Yea for sure, This tank is going in the living room and i would be a dead man if it busted while full. I immediately called jimmy at the fish collection to see what he said and he told me it would cost me 250 to fix but he hasn't returned my phone call and every time i call him hes busy doing something :( If LeeMar is super expensive i'm going to call a few other places.

if you get it replaced ask for a tempered bottom and have them re-seal all the silicon on the tank. Since it was used and now dry the silicon has a tendacy of cracking which will cause problems in the long run.

Best bet, just get a new tank if you can afford one. I saw one from bprimetime had a whole set up for 500

I had posted a response on another forum that almost mirrors your situation. Consider yourself lucky because in her situation, the tank flooded their entire living room causing thousands of dollars in damages. Since I can't link to another forum (per RC rules) I'll just copy and past it over. It is one of my better responses on the subject of glass tanks and building materials, so here goes:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel bad that this happened to you. I have balked for two years now at bringing our 300-gallon "Tank-O-Saurus" from the garage into the living room for this very reason:

DSC09011web.jpg

Even though is it now full of liverock and livestock, out in the garage it sits nonetheless until I can come up with a viable "water-proof-hazard-resistant" battle plan to put in place.

It is all too easy to forget that 200-gallons of water @ 8.5lb per gallon equals 1,700 pounds of watery-just-waitin'-to-mess-up-your-day carnage.
Add live rock and equipment and you easily have a TON of product being held back by a mere fraction of an inch of GLASS!

But for some strange reason, call it a "Fish Aquarium" and we somehow lower our guard with some suedo-soothing sigh of relief believing that the Fish Gods will watch over us. Well..... ITS STILL 2,000 POUNDS OF STUFF BEING HELD BACK BY GLASS AND A LITTLE SILICONE SEALANT. Heck, it isn't even GLUE for gosh sakes (really!) :wildone:
Why all the drama? Well, I'll tell you.

Around these parts we have a term, or adjective to be exact, called "Kevinate" (Hi, my name is Kevin by-the-way  nice to meet you) This silly little term was coined by a few of my friends who, upon witnessing my flavor of building technique, decided to come up with a term to describe thier tongue-in-cheek way of saying I overdo things...hence, I "Kevinate" things
if I may digress:
If something called for a 2x4, I'd use a 4x4....if a 3" nail sufficed, I'd use a 4" long drywall screw... if the directions called for a simple butt joint, I'd joint it, glue it, clamp it, and run a fastener through just for good measure.......you get the picture? ;)

So.....How does this help you now? Abosolutely ZERO I'm afraid (sorry) Except to say, please learn from this experience by:

1) Get more involved with these things and rely less on other people. If you don't understand the mechanics behind something, Seek it, Research it, Learn it! :reading: YOU are the king of your castle, and trust me, there are a hell-of-a-lot more JOKERS :jester: out there than there are Dukes-Of-I-Care! I don't trust other people's urgency for MY needs any further than I can toss a Zimbwian Midget Mountainlion Wrestler, ya know what I mean? (whoo, now there's a mouthfull) :lmao:
Would a contractor use 4" drywall screws if I instructed him to do so? Hell no! The minute I turned my back he'd be back to pounding nails (true story)

2) Be VERY congnitive of what you are purchasing. Ironically, I think we place more attention to purchasing the right lawnmower than we do at inspecting a vessel designed to hold back 2,000 lbs of water in our living room! This is just me, but I don't think I could ever trust a used glass tank, period.
But most of all...

3) "Turn a bad into a good". Don't dwell on what happened....Move up to bigger and better things as a result of it. I realize you are very Mad right now, but you are NOT done, trust me. As they say in this hobby: "you can check out anytime you like, but you can NEVER leave!"

* Besides, this is God's way of telling you he wants you to get a 400-gallon tank next, don't you listen??? :D

Yea im glad it wasn't full of water. i will get it fixed and good advice on having them re-seal everything. I didn't even think of that. I'm still waiting til mondays phone call from leemar. Idk how transportation is going to work out. I may pitch the idea to my father about laying new glass over it. I already have the tank, stand (which is crap) and a sump so buying another used setup is out of the question.
