Craigslist as a first tank?

Hi everyone!

In the past I have had freshwater tanks and have always wanted to make the leap to saltwater tanks.

I stumbled upon this set up on Craigslist and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it as my first saltwater tank? I understand that setting up the entire tank yourself is more rewarding, but I cant help but wonder if this would work for my situation.

Would it be too difficult for me to jump into caring for this tank without having set it up myself? Would it even survive the 40 minute move? Please let me know your thoughts! Thanks

If you like the setup, you should be able to care for it, although moving a tank always has some risks. I would keep the live rock in water as much as possible. You'll need some containers for that. People do move tanks with the live rock out of the water, though.

I'd likely ditch the substrate (sand, crushed coral, etc) and replace it, although it might be providing some filtration. I'd also have plenty of saltwater on hand for water changes, and Prime or Amquel or some similar ammonia binder. Sometimes something large in the live rock dies, and that can be a problem.

honestly, i was just looking for feedback..

It is a complete coincidence that someone else is asking about the same tank. But at least now I know someone else is considering it? Thanks for those who did leave some feedback

Call us a suspicious bunch by nature I guess lol.

As for an opinion, I love my 65 gallon. That set up seems pretty good, though 10 gallon sump is rather small. That is a lot of stuff for the price too, I can tell you I've sunk a lot more into it than that.

I got a full tank setup from craigslist as my first tank. I was very happy to get my feet wet that way. I say go for it.

Zoo's on the bottom look like they're stretching too.

Being a guy who runs a tall and skinny tank you have to remember you're fighting a lighting battle moreso than other comparable tank mates. Generally you want to stick to lighting suggestions built for a tank your length and depth, and just ignore width and gallons. That's probably reefing 101 for some people, but you see a lot of "what lights for my 55g" and the tank being referenced is like 10" shorter than yours.

Id say pass personally, Ive dealt with tall skinny tanks before and won't again. jmho
